I go 50 mph on dirt roads all the time. Then again that's in my Jeep with BFG All-Terrains. In South Dakota the speed limit on dirt roads is 50mph...but these dirt roads are in a lot better condition than others in most other states. At least you're all right man. Sorry to hear you Cobalt got totaled. Now you know what not to do if you get another one.

 

Come on he is only 16........has not got a f****** clue yet. Time will teach him a few more lessons before he has all the experience he needs to do more stupid things.

My first car was a taurus beat the living **** out of it, 2 accidents. now my cobalt got all the "im a teena nd cant get hurt" out of me i get a new car and enjoy it

 

my first car was a C5 Corvette... I drove that things with respect though... only accident was hitting a deer on the highway which I couldn't avoid... Now I have a 3 series BMW though and hopefully someone will buy the damn thing or trade so I can get a SS/SC...

Great, another 16 year old with a car they have no business driving makes insurance go up for the rest of us. And to think, when I was 16 I used to wonder why people had so much hostility toward young drivers...

 

im a teen but i dont have the untouchable attitude like some and i have more experience than most being that ive driven cars/trucks/tractors/carts and what not since i was 9, so not all teens are bad drivers.

Yes, i do race though, and i'm sure someday i'll pay for that.

I drove since I was just a little kid living in the country and on a farm. But that does not mean I would have been ready for a car like this when I was 16. I am glad I had a beater to learn with. I agree with alleycat 100%. Stuff like this makes MY insurance go up which is crap.

I was a complete idiot when I was that age. I sent my dad's Corvette into a 540 spin when I was showing off for my friends. By far the dumbest thing I have ever done in my entire life. Kids that age shouldn't go anywhere near powerful cars like that. Sure I drove the Vette like it was a baby when my dad was around, but when he wasn't, I was a moron.

 

ya...my SS doesnt even go NEAR dirt roads...let alone going 50 down one!! Thats just stupid!! And I have to agree, it is not a FIRST car by any means. My first beater was an '82 El Camino. Yup, thats right, my pride and joy. I drove that thing until it wasnt able to drive no more!! Then I went to a Silverado for a while, loved it, but hated the gas, and now I am in my Cobalt. I treat it likes its my baby. Loved it since the day I got it!!

The road had been partially regraveled about a half mile from my house (live 1 mile in each direction from a paved road) and I didn't notice that until I was already sliding sideways, came over the top of a hill, normally the road is very smooth and hard, fine for going 50 mph, but once you get to the bottom of a hill and its all fresh gravel...

I'm thinking maybe it's time for an STi!

 

An STI? Why, you think that'll do you any better simply because it's AWD? I feel for the loss of the car, but once again, someone else is saying it, 50 MPH down a road with fresh gravel, or any gravel road is completely stupid. Even giving you the benefit of the doubt and saying you did not know about the gravel until you got to it isn't an excuse...That's why you always drive with as much speed as can be managed by your foresight, which at 16, isn't very far, as evident by your accident. Seeing as how you live on this road, I'm inclined to believe that you knew about the gravel, which goes back to stupidity.

In the end, a 30K AWD sports car isn't going to help you. It's heavier, and the handling aspects change. If you get one, great, go for it, but don't think it makes your chances wrecking again any less.

 

Kritter's exactly right. Even if you weren't familiar at all with the road, it's not an excuse. Especially because you said they REgraveled the road, you obviously knew it was gravel whether it was smooth or otherwise. 50mph on any unpaved road is stupid, 50mph on any unpaved road on comp tires is just unimaginably stupid. And an STi cannot make up for that level of stupidity. It's like someone who doesn't know how to drive in snow buying a 4 wheel drive because they think the vehicle will keep them from having a wreck - bottom line is if you don't know how to drive it properly, it won't. All you're doing is giving yourself a false sense of security, which in turn will lead quite possibly into a worse wreck than your first one. I'm glad you have all the money in the world to **** away on new cars that you're obviously not ready to drive. I hope for the sake of others that you never get into one of these accidents involving another car and actually hurt yourself or someone else.

 

Please....DON'T get an STi...we don't want two totaled cars!!! I would buy a beater, and just drive that until your about 18-19 years old...just remember you have your whole life to drive fast cars, that is, unless you kill yourself in one when your 16. I told myself "Tere will be plenty of oppertunities to go fast, and now is not one of them." when i was 16 and about to do something stupid.

 

Go for an Evo 9 they have better traction and stability controls.

 

Sorry to hear about the accident, use this as a lesson and realize that you are lucky to be alive. Could have been worse though, it you had hit someone else.
