Rust

Just as the title states. Has anyone (especially those of you that drive in the salt belt) experienced any kind of rust on their balt? What year/model is it? I'm just curious, I lost my 88 Z24 due to a rotten undercarriage and i'd hate to lose the cobalt to the same thing 20 years down the road.

Cobalts are painted underneith, Mine has survived its first winter with only rust being on the brakes and joints for the steering bar thing. (tie rods???)

Just rinse it off at the car wash when it gets salty. I carry $10 in quarters in the ash tray. My car only gets washed once at the begining of summer for its wax, and rinsed when its salty in the winter.

well pretty much any car is painted underneith, and i think you should wash your car more than once a season

Most of the car is galvanized except for the roof I think. So it should never rust.

There are a number of commercial undercariage coatings available that you may want to look into (if you plan on keeping your Balt for a long time).
I'd shop around though and consult some comsumer reports data........because I'd bet there are some scams out there.

Cars will never be rust proof, The galvanizing and E-coat and undercoating and wax oil coatings all help. But nothing stops rust. The best thing anyone can do is keeping the car clean and avoid dirt build up in the wheel wells and undercarriage. Dirt holds moisture and that will eat the paint and galvanizing faster than anything else. Once the paint film fails say good bye to your car.

so true, and if any of you have done enough body work, you would realize how thin these coatings really are

I'm pretty sure only the body panels were/are stainless steel. The underbody/frame were probably just conventional steel.

Actually I wash it once in the late spring, early summer, and rise it in the winter when it gets satly.

I have never seen water spots create rust, and if I had an SS, maybe I would wash it more often. I have never seen dirt caked in the wheel wells, the rain keeps them pretty clean. Whats the point of washing it when its just going to get water spotted the very next week?

These cars aren't old enough yet to have that kinda' problems yet! Salt takes years to start eating up metal, it's not a quick process!

But no, I had my 05 for a year no problems, I am going on 2 years with this one and still no problems!

Yep, I got rust a couple places, most notable in the engine bay of all places. 2005 SS/Sc. Funny I've had this for 2 years.....had my Cavalier for 8 and saw no rust on it at all.
