The Japanese had started that trend. If you look at the early Toyotas (well, not too early, post 1983), one chassis, several models was the rule. Even the German automakers had taken that route. Volkswagen/Audi use the same chassis for their various models... Well, now as I think about it, the japanese may not have been the innovators of badge engineering, buy maybe GM was in the very beginning... the reason I am reticent to say this is because during the 40's, 50's and 60's, the cars looked different enough where when you bought an Impala, it looked nothing like a comparable Pontiac or Oldsmobile... I think the Japanese may have perfected the brand engineering route... yeah, that's probably more like it.
I know, no one cares... but I think GM may have forgotten the reaming they got over selling a Chevy that looked like a Pontiac that looked like an Oldsmobile that looked like a Buick... Do I even have to mention (GASP!) the Cadillac Cimarron?

When I was a kid, GM was getting all kinds of negative press because they were putting the Chevy V8 in Oldsmobiles (oh, the horror!!). Seriously, it was the lead story on the national news. Of course, they soon started using the disclaimer that GM cars and engines may be produced by different divisions and suppliers worldwide...
But speaking of badge engineering - take a look at the entire Chrysler line from the 80s. They had the Omni/Horizon, and about a dozen K-car variants, and little else. One platform = numerous cars.

Cobalt SS = G5 GT
Cobalt SS/SC = [None]
They didn't make an SS/SC Equivalent.
