where have you been? It's called badge engineering and all the automakers are guilty of it. GM had their feet in the fire during the Eighties had been flogged for their overuse of it. Even now, Ford is doing the same thing with all their cars, EXCEPT the Focus... which i never understood. From a production standpoint, in this day and age, it makes sense. You sit down, design a platform to fill all your market regions. I'll use our beloved Cobalt as an example... The Delta platform was designed to be sold in Europe, Australia, Canada and the US... powertrains were assigned, sheetmetal settled upon for each region and then the cars were seperated via division.. Chevy Cobalt looks like a Chevy bowtie belongs on... meanwhile, upscale a bit, the Pontiac has more bling, has a more Pontiac nose and tail (ala G6) and is sold as sportier choice. Over at Saturn, those folks get their own spin on the body and theirs looks nothing like the rest and has the quad coupe option while still retaining the chassis, powertrain and electronics... instead of engineering 3+ different cars, you engineer ONE car and then spin off from it... it's the only way to do business.

The Japanese had started that trend. If you look at the early Toyotas (well, not too early, post 1983), one chassis, several models was the rule. Even the German automakers had taken that route. Volkswagen/Audi use the same chassis for their various models... Well, now as I think about it, the japanese may not have been the innovators of badge engineering, buy maybe GM was in the very beginning... the reason I am reticent to say this is because during the 40's, 50's and 60's, the cars looked different enough where when you bought an Impala, it looked nothing like a comparable Pontiac or Oldsmobile... I think the Japanese may have perfected the brand engineering route... yeah, that's probably more like it.

I know, no one cares... but I think GM may have forgotten the reaming they got over selling a Chevy that looked like a Pontiac that looked like an Oldsmobile that looked like a Buick... Do I even have to mention (GASP!) the Cadillac Cimarron?

Maybe it was an 08' Twin Turbo SS... You know like a top secret prototype or something. They just threw the Pontiac badge on it to throw us off.

The G5 is just a stop gap in the US . It wont be sticking around in the US . GM brought it here just to pacify dealers that were begging for a Sunfire replacement . It isnt supposed to go beyond 2008 . Notice how GM intentfully is not really advertising this car AT ALL

It almost seems too far back to believe, but at one time each division had their own line of engines too.

When I was a kid, GM was getting all kinds of negative press because they were putting the Chevy V8 in Oldsmobiles (oh, the horror!!). Seriously, it was the lead story on the national news. Of course, they soon started using the disclaimer that GM cars and engines may be produced by different divisions and suppliers worldwide...

But speaking of badge engineering - take a look at the entire Chrysler line from the 80s. They had the Omni/Horizon, and about a dozen K-car variants, and little else. One platform = numerous cars.

Cobalt LS = G5
Cobalt SS = G5 GT
Cobalt SS/SC = [None]

They didn't make an SS/SC Equivalent.

Never seena G5 commercial. Pontiac is currently running a 1 min commercial but the G5 was left out. Only the G6 and a couple others including the new SUV are in it.
