Should I get it?
here we go, i was 16 when i put a 5,000 down on my ss s/c, my father paid the rest, ever since i give him about 100-200 a week during school, and 500-600 a week during non school time. I'm down to about 7,000 now and should be done paying the car off by the summer(hopefully) its possible, but i also did it because i work 3 jobs. You only have 1 so just incase u loose it your done.
I don't see how you can say that anamalous..considering the cobalt ss/sc is typically a car built for the late teens to mid to late 20's how can you say its not a car he can afford? If it is something you enjoy go ahead and buy it...we arn't on this earth forever is the way I see it. Enjoy the time you have while your young is the view point that I live from...and well I have made it through college just fine making my $240 a month car payment.
wow.
I cant wait till my 40s then. porsche for me. regardless of the reality of my finances.
WOOT!
wasn't saying that at all. $20,000 for a car is not expensive and if he can afford it then he should get it if he wants it.
I'm 18 and just got a new job making $9.75 an hours 40 hours a week(1560.00 a month)
I want to get a new car because all I think about all day are cars. I narrowed it down to an srt4 or a cobalt ss/sc. The cobalt is 06 g85 6k miles for 16.999 and I'm sure i can get it down 500 or more ($285 a month). I could get an srt4 for 13k and have more money to mod($230 a month). I'll also have $1000 down because I'll trade in my 06 ls that i owe only 7k on.
I don't have any bills other than car right now and I'm sure I will be paying my insurance with a faster car and a few bucks for rent to live at home. I plan on going to state college next year and I'll get a part time job then
Should I get a car I'll love? or think about having a ss all day?

DON'T DO IT!!!!!
I traded in my base model cobalt after only 6 months for a 2.4 ss. Needless to say, my payments went from $223 financed to $351 smartbuy. I HATE the car and my base model was more reliable and wel-built than this one.
If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't have kept the base model cobalt, but I sure as hell wouldn't have traded it in for another cobalt.
Save the money and put it towards a smart decision....whatever that may be

thats the problem. you kids have NO sense of value.
how much is your morgage? your rent? , who pays for your electricity, your food.....
in reality you arent paying for your car. your parents are.
you cant afford a new car on $1200 a month.
unless someone else is paying for for your "real life"
im 19, i work for my parents and i get paid 10 bux an hour "cash" (yea hate me if you will, but its a perk you get when u work for your parents) i had a 07 ss/sc ordered and about to be shipped that i would be paying for (with my downpayment i had payments down to around $300/month). i sat down, talked with the rents about it, and decided that i shouldnt get it. my heart was broken, but it was the BEST decision i could have ever made for myself as a 19 year old.
i know im only a year older then you so u prolly dont wanna get a lecture from me, but honestly, think about the future and how much of a BETTER car you might be able to get 4 years down the road when you finish college. other than the fact that you will be able to get a better car when u graduate college, you will be able to enjoy college life a lot more since u will have a cushion of money around so that you can buy the things you want while all ur friends are bitching about how they are sooooo broke.
i talk to a few guys our age with cars ten times nicer than ours, (i have an ls too) and they most of them bitch to me about how they are broke and never have any money to do nething.... kepp all that in mind.

I would definitely stay with the LS. I have an LS too but i pay $320 a month, plus insurance [$75], plus rent [$250], plus all utilities [about $150], plus cable [$30], plus internet [$30], plus a few credit cards [about $150]. Im 19 with all these bills....And guess what...I lost my job. Now i cant pay ANY of that. Luckly i have a few people helping me while im looking for a job. But if i didnt have these people i would lose my car and everything else. Not good. I would keep your LS so if something bad does happen you still have that small car payment. Just my opinion.

I know youll thank yourself so much later on down the road for making the smart (but difficult) choice.
ill add this, since its gunna be ur first year in college, i HIGHLY reccomend taking a finance (investing) class even if it doesnt fit into your "class/degree plan" i thought i new a lot about managing money, i realized i only knew the beginning of it. you will look at money in a different way, and learn tons of loops and bends of how to invest.manage your money and stuff. with us making the kind of money we are for only being 18-19 year olds should have no problem retiring early if we do the right stuff with it.
k im done acting like a dad, lol
im not gunna lie, there was tears in my eyes when i went back to the dealership and told them i had to cancel my order....

keep your ls, mod the crap out of it, even after all the money you'd put in your ls to make it quite nice and really a great daily driver, hell you can even put a turbo on it with a piggyback tune and be faster than an SS and then you'd only payed a little more than you would for an SS and its all your own... get suspension mods first you'll LOVE EM!
Screw you, you don't know me nor my age. I am 21. I go to college full time and I work a part time job of about 35 hours a week. I get fiancial aid money back from college that I put towards car payment and cell phone bill. I pay my own insurance, buy my own gas, buy my own food. I am getting ready to move out into an apartment as well. Your just what I thougth you was an *******.
Seriously though, calm down a bit. He's right, whether you want to admit it or not...
1600 a month is more than enough to have a $250+ month car payment and still be able to pay all bills. there is no argueing that, but what about being able to SAVE the amount of money you should be saving???? there is a lot more to money management then just being able to pay off your bills on time.

You have to plan for the worst or a rainy day.
thats when you call mom, because you roasted your front tires off, and had no clue that tires arent covered under warranty.
or that an oilchange will cost you between $50-100
or that winter tires are needed for the ss/sc at about $500
or that speeding ticket for $200
and the insurance jump for to many speeding tickets $200
needs brakes $100
the list is endless.
cars need more than a payment, insurance, and gas.
and thats not even getting into "real world" expensese that will pop up.
fridge crapped out $400
computer you need for school dies $500
Broken condom. priceless.
Im happy to take the "*******" comment.
If you are happy to realise that you have no concept of real world finances.

Thanks for all of the responds and I took everyone's post into consideration. I always knew that I shouldn't get a ss/sc deep down, but knowing that I could afforded it and only it made me think of all the possibilities, but I'm still considering an srt4 because they are way cheaper and I it's more in my price range. Who knows, tomorrow I might fall on my head and realize that I'm dumb for buying another car when my ls is an easy monthly payment of $160 a month

Don't get anything. I've made that mistake. 2 vehicles. Between insurance and payments I was paying a grand/month on my 8.19/40 hr paycheck. Along with 5 CCs and other loans.
I have three bills: Mazda, cell, insurance now. I am getting back into school and getting a 2nd job to get myself back on my feet. We all speak from experience.
