small idea

thought i would share it with everyone.

when the air goes into your engine compartment, where does it go after? the only place it can go is down under the car.

why not modify the cowl under the back of your hood to let the air go somewhere other than under your car?

(hint, heat will exit there also)

this is like making a heat extractor without changing the outside of the car. just a diff way of doing things

under your stock hood there is a black plastic piece that goes along the bottom of the windshield, there are ways to modify it to make the entire structure act like a heat extractor

well, too many posts in here. Time to give us the answer.

if you take the whole thing off you risk getting rain down there, so I know that's not it.

if that's what it is.....i'll pass. not worth a couple degrees to look like you were in an accident or your hood is broke.

A cowl induction hood works because there is a high pressure at the base of the windshield and it forces air down into the engine bay, so is this going to let air out from under the hood, or shove air into engine bay?

I've heard of big boost Solstice and Sky's modifying the piece of trim that runs along the bottom of the windshield for this purpose.

x2. I'll keep a little bit of extra heat in over having my hood aligned all funky like.

no the info was appreciated, like you said, it's nice to throw it out there and source everyone's brain. there might be an aerodynamics genius in the house present that can enlighten us on how the airflow over and into the engine by would work..... you never know.

I don't think ducting heat down would be as easy as ducting heat up since it rises naturally.. hence the whole hood vent craze.

I do know though that some vehicles are designed for specific hood/underhood configurations. These encourage proper airflow through the intercooler, radiator, and engine bay in general which helps cool things down. Aircraft are the same way. If you take the cowl off an airplane or change the plastic/rubber ducting and idle it, it may overheat. You just don't get the airflow into/through the places where you need it.

The plastic piece that sticks down under your car's front bumper is a similar device. I've actually heard of people's engines getting hotter when these pieces are broken off/missing.

do you know how fast heat rises in the atmosphere? not very fast. maybe a couple miles an hour. Do you know how fast the air is flowing into the engine bay? well, how fast is the car moving? At almost any speed, the fact that heat naturally rises is a non-issue when dealing with aerodynamics. HOWEVER, i do still agree that it would be better to make the air go over the car instead of under it.
