Well first issue with new cobalt here, basically we just got 1 key when we bought it. no remote of any kind with it. soo anyhow. say you drive to work, get out lock the 4drs with the button on the door. go to work. now the security is automatically on now. sooo when you get off work come out to the car and try to get in boom alarm is on. begins to sound when you open door then turns off when you put key in ignition. if our dealer doesnt have the remote how do we go about getting one for this vehicle? also can spare keys be made at locations besides dealerships? the wife loves to lock her keys in the car and me not having one for such an issue worries me. we will call the dealer monday to see if they can find out anything for us. any help would rock
i agree, its used with 19,000 miles on it. im figuring they just forgot. but i thought they went and looked and said they didnt have another key. surely there is a remote someplace? given they dont have it or have lost it where can i get a replacement if they cant provide one?

Yes you will be able to order the remote and have it programmed by your dealer or you could program it if they would tell you how. Its pretty simple, I did it on my GMC truck. You can get the key cut somewhere besides the dealer but you would have to purchase it from them (some other places MAY have it as well but I doubt it) thanks to the embedded crap that most new car keys have. GOOD LUCK!!!
cool thanks for the quick response. so i am correct in assuming the key we do have has a 'chip' in it and is programmed for the car. we planned on just going to lowe's or walmart (where ever they can cut keys) and have one cut for us, but obviously that wont work if it doesnt have the chip. yes ive heard programming keys is pretty easy. if you guys know anywhere online for the remotes it would rock. im going to assume the dealer wont help, seeing how it was used etc. we'll call monday and see what they can do for us. shouldnt have left but wife was all excited etc. you know they are sometimes lol
Dealership will be willing to sell you new remotes, I bet. Also, a blank key will work in the door, but not the ignition... so if locking keys in the car is the issue, having a blank will work fine.
You can buy the remotes and Im pretty sure the keys as well off of ebay. There should be something online that tells you how to program the remotes...I know there was for my trailblazer...It may even be the same procedure.
With regards to getting an extra key cut...I got one made for 20 bucks at the dealer for the TB.
BTW where at in Ky are you?

update
well i worked on the car some today. here is what my wife and i came up with. per the manual if the alarm is on you can put your key in the door turn counter clockwise and it will disarm. ours however does not do this... basically what we think is that it isnt the original key at all. it says 'illco' on the key instead of chevy... we believe the car was possibly repossessed hence and the original keys were never recovered hence why it says illco and doesnt disarm the alarm unless im just doing it wrong. ill call tomorrow and report back can you guys help me out finding a replacement if they cant help? im not sure if ebay would be all that great, id be worried if i bought the correct thing lol. like i said im a jeep guy lol
Using the key in the door wont disarm it.
You'll notice the horn "chirps" in pre-alarm mode until you get the IGN ON, and if you're too slow it goes into full alarm mode.
This is normal
To completely disarm this system prior to entry you MUST have the keyless entry remote.
Just buy them (and another key) from the dealer- as they will have to use the TECH2 to "train" them (both the remote AND the new key) into the BCM in order to work.

well just talked to the dealer. he said 60$ for remote and 70$ to program it... the manual said you can disarm it by turning the key in the drivers door lock counterclockwise, that doesnt work with this key. told the fella it said 'illco' and he agreed it wasnt the original key.
will this work on our car? http://cgi.ebay.ca/1-pair-2005-6-Che...QQcmdZViewItem
ive heard these arent too hard to program. the dealer fellow also said the key did not have a chip in it, which i can believe since its an aftermarket ket. wouldint it have had a chevy logo etc to have the chip? i would assume if i wanted a key made it would have to be programmed etc and they couldnt just get any blank key to make it with since they cant jus toss the chip in any blank key... right?

OK
The 2005 and 2006 keys are different. The 2005 does not use a "chip" within the key, but the 2006 does. If you have a 2006 and one key that works it's easy to add keys
(there's a post on that in here somewhere- do a search on "PassKey 3+")
The remote WILL need to be programmed into the BCM using a TECH2 scan tool so you'll have not much choice but to pay the $70 there.
That one on eBay "looks" like it should work- BUT as always eBay is a crap shoot. AND if it quit working in a month you're screwed.(the dealer would cover it under warranty)
My advice would be to get it from the dealer.
I couldnt find where it states you can use the key in the door to disarm the alarm in either the 2005 or 2006 owners manuals, but I assure you it cannot as there is no wiring to the lock cylinder in the door.

well its an 05 so at least i can make a key for myself easily. like i said i dont like her having the only one she loves to lock it in there. so thats cool. ill buy the remote from ebay for 20$ shipped ill take the chance. the seller (different from link) also said they could provide instructions for getting it programmed. ive heard of ways to do this with other vehicles, we'll see what we get. sadly our dealer is about 1.5 hours away and it would be tough to go there for warranty work or even to get something programmed. im a do it yourself guy anyhow lol. if i cant get it programmed ill let the dealer do it. thanks for the help!
I asked my buddy, who used to work detailing cars at a local Chev dealer, and he said.
The Cobalts like every other Chev, come with 2 keys and 2 remotes. The 2 keys are the only keys that match your locks/ignition which are obviously installed at the factory, and the remotes are programmed from at the factory when electrical etc is done.
The be even more specific, he said most dealers keep the remotes in the glove box of the car prior to sale, to prevent mix ups.
To me it sounds like you got shafted, your dealer probably sold some remotes and took them from your car, and reprogrammed them.
Also, if they want to charge you that much, try shopping around at a few GM dealers, Pontiac, Saturn etc etc. They would all have the same equipment. One of them might end up charging you less.
Or you could always call your dealer tell them that a different dealer quoted you the price of the remotes and free reprogramming, see what they doo. That's how I got my sunroof, side airbags, and delivery charge, and extended warrenty for free on my SS2.4. I told them the pontiac dealer was going to throw it all in on a G5 Pursuit GT.
Edit: didn't read your UPDATE post, the car being previously repossessed would make sence of the remote/key situation like you said. Not to many people are going to go out and give the repo guy the sets of keys.

ilco
I bought my blanks off of ebay from dywalkr7, for about 6 bucks and the dealer cut them free of charge.....so I have 2 extras. My "original" key that came with the car when I bought it brand new also said "ilco" on it though, I thought it was kinda wierd that it wouldn't have the Chevrolet symbol.
hhhmmm... ill just have a key cut some place since i dont have to worry about the chip. i do feel like i got shafted on the remotes though. eh... ill get it all set. there is ALWAYS a way around everything.
