STIs are nice.
Few things to note about STIs:
- Nice DD and occasional track car.
- Super solid tranny on the years you're talking about.
- The 'Balt SS/TC is more bang for your buck.
- STIs do have rattles but most are minor like trim pieces rather than suspension or brakes.
- If you're not looking to go beyond stage II in an STI then you'll be good. At stage two you'll probably be 320hp or so at the crank. Stage II is easy to obtain and is a bit more fun than stock.
- 500whp in an STI is super expensive and harder to do than it is in a Cobalt.
- You can't just put an intake or exhaust on an STI like you can a Cobalt. The ECUs are totally different and nearly every mod on an STI needs a tweek to the tune or you can **** up your engine. Basically, you're more likely to damage an STI with bolt ons than a Cobalt.
- There is more tuning support and way more products for an STI.
- BOVs aren't good for STIs.
- STIs are not good straight line racers. The gears are waaaaaay lower than a 'Balt. You will be shifting way more often. From a dig an STI is better than a 'Balt. From a roll the 'Balt is better.
- STIs sound great.
- If you're in to attracting 16 year old boys then the STI is a great way to pick them up.
- It's easier to sell an STI than a 'Balt but it's harder to find an unmodded one.
- 5x114.3 nuff said there. LOL.
- Maintenance and repair costs are about the same.
- If you thought GM dealerships were bad about denying warranty work due to mods then you haven't seen anything yet.
- 93 octane required. 91 will work but it's about like running 89 on a 'Balt.
- HUGE forums and TONS of information. North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club is one of the busiest sites on the web. Go there and look how many people are viewing each forum. This is also your best bet on finding what you're looking for. Post a WTB.

I agree with almost all of this except that bovs are fine on these cars. Even without a tune it will run just fine. People on those forums act like there so bad. Maybe so if your trying to get a better drag time or lap time. It just makes it run a little rich between shifts depending on how it's adjusted. I couldn't hardly tell a difference when I put one on my sti.
Get a sti. You'll love it. I have had a 04 sti and now have a 07 cobalt ss. I plan on selling it sometime and get another 04-07 sti because it was hands down the best car I've ever owned. Stage 2 is 350hp at the motor fyi. The lower gears in my opinion are fun especially when your going through turns because you can always stay in the boost. Cobalts are fun but fwd sucks when you have decent power.
Yes, untuned can cause them blowing up but I've never seen one blow up because of a bov? I have yet to read any real world evidence of bov's being bad for the ej's. I have read all the threads on nasioc and iwsti and the only problems I have heard of are they run a little rich which I don't think is going to hurt anything. Certain Intakes can cause problems when untuned but once again, I had no issues with my stage 2 sti with a bov and intake. People just read crap and get scared. I had my sti for a year and never had a motor problems. That's from my own personal experience..
The stock BPV is rated for 30psi. No reason to get a BOV as they are not good for the car and only give you the "cool" sound. The cars are super sensitive. I'm not saying there are people out there who haven't had problems, but 75% of them run wayyy worse when you take stock BPV off and just throw a BOV on. if tuned for it, sure i guess, but they are only needed on these cars when you go big turbo. I know first hand people having ones run shitty cause of just throwing an intake or a BOV on.
