cobalt bodies underneath are two sided zinc phosphate dipped and stand up well. the cradles and twisiting beams, the steel control arms on ls lt and the struts dont. in rust belt areas, a rust preventative oiling (Krown, rust check) etc is a good idea.
The captive nuts for the cradle at the front and the twisting beam at the rear rust horribly so anti rust coating up there is good too.

I dont drive my Delta in the winter. My wntrbtr2 is rust proofed with this special oiling product each winter. It drips for a few days a massive pita but it sure takes care of rust. A good applicator will also spray the anti rust stuff in the bumper/fender seams and the bottom of the doors, places Delta's love to rust.

Yeah, I don't plan on getting it done. Run it through a couple car washes that spray underneath that's about it.

I've had my car sprayed with Rust Check every year since I bought it and its mint after 4 winters. The salt used up here in Ottawa is crazy, so without it the underside would be crusty already. As John said, the areas that will bubble and rust first are the door bottoms (especially since the paint on the bottom edge of the door wears off due to contact with that rubber seal on the door sill), and the front hood seam (there is no seam sealer from the factory).

On the underside, all the suspension components and cradle will rust quickly. The actual underside of the body isn't bad, but its everything else that goes.

Absolutely, and anyone who says otherwise is a fool and has never owned cars long term in the rust belt. If you see salt and brine, you need to do it. I will be shooting my undercarriage with POR-15 and the topping off with Fluid Film. If you don't have access to painting equipment, I would just recommend scrubbing the underbody clean, and then following with Fluid Film in a spray can. I suggest you look up Fluid Film as it is quite legendary in the Snow and Ice industry. It is sold at most John Deere Equipment dealerships.

My background in this is I work in the Snow and Ice industry, and am constantly fighting rust on my trucks.

I wouldn't. It will probably plug the drainage holes in the bottom of the doors, promoting further rust/corrosion.

I used a few strips of 3M clearbra (the **** you'd normally put on the front of the car) which I put on the very bottom edge (the part of the door skin that is like folded around the bottom of the door), but not covering the upper edge (if that makes any sense lol). Works mint. Need to put new pieces on though as stuff has managed to get in there, but it was good for a couple years I'd say.

Wouldn't a decent, thick undercoat help reduce road noise though? i've thought of getting one just for that reason

I'm having a rush issue at the edge of my hood. Where the metal folded over making the edge of it rounded. Somehow water got up in there and now I have a rust bubble. Has this happened to anyone else?

Its common. Its because there is no seam sealer. Water gets in there and sits in the edge then it bubbles and comes around. Rust Check would solve that, as it expels moisture thus protecting the inner seam...though its too late now. Go to a body shop lol

I would advise against any type of thick tar undercoating as it WILL dry out, crack, let moisture in, then rot the car faster.

Rust Check ftw
