I just got back from dealer after having my e brake cable tightened and i asked them if i were to install a cai, strut bar and whatever else would it void my warranty? They replied by saying anything you put on your car thats aftermarket will void your warranty no matter what it is. I personally think its bullshit, but i was wondering is this true? Ive read other people saying their dealerships say it wont their warranties, im going to call GM and ask but didnt know if anyone on here knew what is true and what isnt. I would only think if the problem was directly related to the part then it wouldnt void it but im not sure.
Ah the age old warrenty question. Everyone is going to cite the moss warrenty act here and tell you your dealership can't do that and blah blah blah. Honestly, they can't either but be prepared to fight for it because it's them vs you and GM has more lawyers. Don't worry though, your warrenty will be up in a few years anyway. Then it doesn't matter.
So what should I do then? I mean i really wanna put these parts in but i dont want my warranty getting voided that would suck. I havent bought anything yet, but man the service guy was a dick.

By law yes, but it's going to be up to you to prove that the parts didn't. Plus it's your word vs their service departments and if they are working on the car and have it in their shop you are in a bad spot.
I'm just saying this because everyone around here is all tough when it comes to this saying they can't void your warranty but they will try and it will be up to you to fight to get it fixed.
Man your dealer are dumb, any of those things you mentioned would not have much impact on your car,in fact a rear sway bar only stands to help, **** my dealer is into modding they have enough sense to know better that, I wish I had this newsletter from gm from last year, it goes on to say that a short ram is not enough to void a warrenty but for their techs to keep an eye on the filters for excessive oil

he's trying to scare you because a dealer does not like warrenty work... ask him to show you in writing where it says that a cai will void your warrenty...
Ahh good idea. I think im gonna either call GM directly or talk to the manager at the dealer cuz the service guy was a dick. I dont get why it would void anything, unless like other people said the product is dircetly related to the problem.
He may be thinking that it will void the warranty on the part, which it will. It will not void your entire warranty. It only voids the warranty on any parts you modify or replace.
As for having to prove that your mod didn't cause any problems, no. The burdon of proof is explicitly put on them by the previously mentioned Magnuson-Moss Act, not you.

Here's my $0.02, if you're going to go aftermarket (anything other than GMPP) keep it simple and get it done by yourself or somewhere other than your dealership. By simple I mean no ECU flashing, no F/I, internals, etc. For example if you got a CAI and the strut/sway bars then 6 months down the road you get a CEL and need to bring in the car all you would have to do is remove the "aftermarket" parts, bring in the car, and reassemble when you get your car back. A hassle? Yes, but if you want to be sure they don't hassle you about warranty that is the route I'd go. No dealer WANTS to do warranty work so many of the service departments out there will look for any excuse not to, especially a big shiny tube under your hood that says INJEN lol.
If you really want to play it safe though, go with only GMPP mods, they're intake should be out this fall.

By law they have to prove it, but in reality it will be you fighting to get your car worked on and proving your intake didn't do damage. Car dealers are asses and it is their job to screw you, their profits depend on it so when you car is on the lift and the service guy comes out and tells you it's because of your intake and the warranty won't cover it have fun getting them to prove it.
I'm not trying to argue the fact that the burden of proof is theirs but I am just telling you if the dealer is being a dick like the thread starter says they are they are not going to do that warranty work without a fight and I bet they are willing to take the gamble that you won't have the ***** to stand up to them or the money to go get a good lawyer. I personally don't see the problem just swapping the intake out for the stocker if you have to go the dealer, it's the easies thing you can do to a car.
I do think it would be interesting to send a hidden camera team in there to play a situation like this out. I would like to see what excuses the dealer comes up with.
actually from my experience its not usually the service writer or manager that are dicks as much as the tech's. see both service managers and tech's get paid by a percentage of service ie: everytime there is a problem and lets say the repairs are $500 you as a writer get paid .05 % or $25 for that job so the more jobs and money the better regardless of the job, if its warranty or not. tech's on the other hand get paid flat rate or a certain dollar amount per hr worked. most tech's do not like doing warranty work because it pays less for example .2 to hook up a scanner and clear a code under warranty as opposed to an hour they charge for non warranty work. the tech's try to say the cai, exhaust etc voided it so they make more time as cust pay work. the big joke in service was whats the difference between a tech and a puppy ?

From the parts listed I would say screw that GM dealer and find one who is more performance oriented. All the parts listed above will have little to no effect on how the car was designed or works. The parts improve GM's design and free up some FUN! Whats your dealers problem?
