Weird thing happened

I was driving my cobalt shifting fine, going into gear fine(manual)

I get to a red light and i stop, i take it out of gear cause im too lazy to hold the clutch in at times, so i go to put it back into gear, it wont go, i tried 2nd, no dice, and so on. so car behind me helps me to push it off the road, and i first think my clutch went, so i turn off the car and it starts fine, still doesnt go into gear. so i turn it off and let it sit while talking to my dad, so he can get me the dealers number. then i try agian 10min later and it works fine, no issues yet....any clue on wtf happened?

im just worried will it do it again on me?

My Cavalier would do that. It would randomly decide when it wanted & didnt want to go in gear. What was happening, was a spring in the pressure plate was popping out and getting stuck on the clutch. Hopefully the same thing isnt happening to ya.

My SS often doesnt want to go back into first at a redlight, but I can usually get it into 2nd and then back into first. This is pretty common. Its strange yours wouldnt go into any gear.

Never had that issue, but one thought, while you mention you took it out of gear this time, never ever ever sit there at a red light holding your clutch in. It's bad for your throwout bearing and will cause premature wear ultimately leading to a costly repair .

hold on, wait, i know this is off topic, but im not supposed to be holding in the clutch while at a stop light? Is this common knowledge that I just didn't know for ten years of my life?

You can if you want to... However, you will wear out your throwout bearing faster than you would if you were to just put it in gear once the light turns green, versus sitting with the clutch depressed.

you been driving manual for 10 years and you always held the clutch in at a red light? this should belong in the fox nfl network segment of " c'mon man"

that's right. I wouldn't call it common knowledge, because many people were either taught wrong, or just learned on their own so end up picking up habits that are bad. I don't offer advice on manual cars anymore because everyone is a "pro" and knows how to drive.

That being said, you probably don't want to hold in your clutch for long periods of time anymore.

nope... what happens is you get a bunch of people that have no clue, but since they've been driving a manual for x years, they know what they're doing. Or since they learned from x they know better than you. Basically it will turn into a bitchfest, led by people that are driving incorrectly but won't admit it or take advice from people that know better.

My 2.2L cobalt will do that occasionally, I just let the car roll alittle if im on a slight incline and it will go right in to gear.

mostly likely it's your shifter forks. I bet you can put it in gear when the car is turned off, right?

my ss sc does this from time to time when i go to a stop sign or a red light i pop it out of gear because sitting on the clutch is unwanted wear, well when i try 1st its tough to put in so i pull it back and put it in again like butter(sounds like im talking about sex)hahahaha
i hate when the person in front of me takes offf so as **** causes me to stay in gear longer or if from a stop hold the clutch, so i wait like half a sec to get more room and im good to go.

do you have the stock tranny mounts? that might explain your issue. do a search, there's a whole thread about the stock tranny mounts and how difficult it is to shift into 1st.

this happens to me all the time. when it won't go into first, i put it back in neutral, take my foot off the clutch and try it again. it usually works the second time the clutch goes in.

sounds like a transmission cable alignment issue...

ontop of the trans their are two cables....

from time to time there's a roll pin on one of the shifting forks that gets broken, also it could be the plastic pin under neath the shifter or it's plastic bushing.

Alignment with getrag transmissions is key, if they are out of alignment by just the slightest amount they can sometimes refuse engagement or can wear synchros in the transmission cause all sorts of problems
