here's a tidbit of info i learnt from Automotive repair school:

IN a crash airbags are only 3% effective if you are wearing your seat belt. Specially if your seat belts are equiped with pretensioners that tighten the seat beat up to 2 inches via an explosion forcing a piston into a chamber shortening the lenght of the seat belt making your foward body mass travel a smaller distance.

The reason his airbag light is on is because the pretensioners went off and thats part of the loop. And the reason the airbags themselves didnt go off it because the hit was above the frame rails. So the fenders/hood/rad support took the whack, and since they are much softer than the frame rails they dampened the impact. SO it wasnt quite a dead stop. But regardless, if hes wearing his seat belt, and he hits a cement wall, he'll likely never need the airbag, because his seat belt will hold him back, if anything he'll get nasty bruises on his wrists when that sucker goes off.

wow... I'm just amazed that the airbags didn't deploy... I mean the whole radiator support is crushed. I'd definately consider seeking legal help. A lawyer would probably look over a possible case for free... b/c you could get a lot from something like this.

I talked to the adjuster about the service airbag message and he said its because in the cobalt there is a chain of sensors and 2 in a row have to be activated to go off but since only the one behind the radiator got hit only 1 sensor is armed as opposed to 2 which would have deployed the bags.

I hate having to wait for the adjuster to call me back to tell me if its totalled or not. I really want to know either way so I know if I get my baby back or if I have to go get an older camero or something.

You have to be patient. I manage a paint and body shop so I understand how insurance companies work. They are not putting you off. From the time an accident occurs to the time an adjuster sees the car can take up to a week. Keep in mind that the number of claims vs the number of adjusters is very overwheling.

Well I got a rough quote of 6800 they need to get in touch with state farm to see how much theyre willing to put into a car with 10800 left on the loan.
