What mods void your warranty?
What mods void your warranty?
Hey, i have been driving my 08 cobalt as my beater for about a year and half with 14,000 miles and i want to do small mods to it because it gets boring. I'm currently building my 1/4 mile car now for the weekends to have some fun but want to do some small mods to my LT cobalt.
What all mods exactly void the warranty? My friend has a new T/C one and he was putting the hahn 3" on it and the dealership said it will void his whole warranty if he doesn't go with the GMPP exhaust.
I'm thinking of doing exhaust, intake, lower it and put some nice wheels on it.
Any advice?

a modification that will "void your entire warranty" is a urban legend like the Yeti.

Bingo, and in recap, and "intake" will ONLY void your stock "intake" warranty (but why do you need a factory warranty on an "intake" that you dont have on the car?)
An intake will NOT void your "power train" warranty unless they can PROVE it did...

Doing something like throwing a bigger snail on an SS/TC would most likely void your powertrain warranty because significantly more power over stock would come with it, but to say that a cat-back exhaust would void anything would mean that I'd be looking for a new dealer from there on out.
Anything that you modify that they prove causes a failure will void the warranty for THAT part. The rest of your warranty will still be intact.
Example 1: You install a bigger turbo and blow the transmission. No warranty for the trans.
Example 2: You install a bigger turbo and the rear suspension breaks. They are unrelated so it would be fixed under warranty.
Of course they don't make money replacing things at no cost to you. Some places will fight about everything and drag it out hoping you either don't understand or will give in. Some places will fix everything and never mention anything about your mods even if it may have caused the problem.

Getting caught with an aftermarket tune, or the wrong calibration in your ECM WILL result in you getting your ENTIRE powertrain warranty voided, no questions asked. If youre truly concerned about warranty coverage, stick with basic boltons and avoid tuning or ECM replacement of any kind except the GM Stage kit.
