best place is a public scale (well thy say for commercial use only but screw that!)

I guess it depends if there is one nearby to where you live.

In Calgary---there are two heading east on the Trans Canada highway. One is an official DOT scale (but its only manned sometimes) and the other is smaller never manned one.

Took my 74 Formula Firebird across---1900 KGS+! (4180lbs) thats with me, over 1/4 tank and a trailer hitch My ailing Mazda 323---2300lbs

The stock curb weights are about 3/4 of the way down:

We use the truck scales at the south gate of International Paper in Ticonderoga NY. Go there after midnight and they don't care if you weigh your car. They'll even give you a slip for it!
My 98 Cavalier weighed nothing. With me in it, full tank of dino, weighed 2439... of course that car was a stripped down base coupe. Haven't gotten around to weighing the Cobalt.

That's a good place to start, but it also doesn't tell us what options are installed on the car that they weighed. Is that fully loaded or with no options? Every little thing adds weight (sunroofs being the biggest offenders with the glass, motor, etc). Has anyone actually weighed a Cobalt yet???? I'd love to weigh my SS I just don't know anyplace around here that would do it.

Is there a dump or recycling depot nearby?

There's this big recycling/waste depot about 20 mins from my house. One of those places where you have to take old paint cans, chemicals, or whatever waste you can't dispose of on your own. Also large quantities that you can't dispose of at the curb. They do it by weight, drive your car in, they weigh you, dump what you want, they weigh you on the way out, and you pay by weight. I bet if you asked the guy real nice he'd let you pull the car on the scales just to find out.
