I still dont see the point of getting the weaker cobalt, ill be losing money on the deal when i go to trade it in.

I doubt my car will make it another 3 years, im guessing its gonna die after 2. I've taken care of it, but its so damn old. (a 93) So lets say it breaks down iin 2 years, and i have 6-8000 saved up. I dont think it would be a wise idea to buy a 6-8000 car that I dont like, just cause I can buy it up front. and when I go to sell it in a couple of years, im gonna lose 1-2000 on it. To me, it doesnt make sense to blow that money.

Hell I dont know, if I absolutely have to get another car, shouldnt I just put what money I have towards the cobalt?

WAIT!

Buying a car that much cash at minimum wage is crazy. Buy a cheap car and put away a little each month---get the top of the line Cobalt later when your making more. Of course it'll be Turbo then

but nobody suggested what to do if i need another car and i only have 6-8k saved up. Im pretty sure it would be a waste of money to buy a car i dont want but need. Cause by the time i can afford the cobalt, that car will only be worth 3-4k.

But by the time i have 6-8k saved up, id be able to swing the payments on the new ss s/c. Things would be tight, and it would take 2-4 yrs, but i could barely swing em.

I just dont feel like being forced to buy a car i dont want, just cause i can buy it outright and pay for it all at once. And have to start saving all over again for the cobalt.

But i do agree with you guys that waiting is the best option, and to buy only when it wont restrict other financial things too much. i just dont know if my current car will last till that time.

I'm in the same situation you are...I'm graduating U of M in Mechanical Engineering next spring and have decided for forego a SS/SC even after I get a decent job. I'll sell my T/A for around $6k in the next 8 months and probably spend that money on an 01 or 02 Cavalier, just for repairability and gas mileage. I would really like a Cobalt, but I can't justify it, given the college loans I also have piling up. And keep in mind at my current internship I'm making 18.25/hr....not a lot but not too little either. To be honest, once I get some money under me after working for a couple years, I'll probably spend it on an AWD platform. Reading threads on cobaltss.net has seriously enlightened me to the problems common to the SS/SC...more than I was expecting.

And insurance will KILL you. I'm assuming you're younger than 25...so full coverage on an SS/SC will at least run $1200/6 months from my research. So really your new Cobalt will be costing you around $20,000 for the first year. On minimum wage you'd better wait.

on full coverage it will be around 1700, but with the bare minimum it will be 700. Weird how it will be cheaper than my tempo's insurance (750).

Ive gotten a lot of suggestions already though on the next car before the balt: probe, lancer, escort zx2. Id like the probe, but even at a 97 its still a little old for me.

I know what you mean about all the problems, theyre all these stupid little things that shouldnt be happening (bumper alignment, weird sounds, buttons falling off or not responding). Thats another reason why waiting is a good idea! Maybe they'll fix these things by 08?

I know the next cars gotta be manual, fuel efficient, fwd, reliable, not a cavalier or a civic or a grand am, and its gotta have at least 130+ hp. Am I being picky? yeah, but you would too if you had to blow 6-8k on a car you really dont want. Better make it worth it.

you are obviously a moron. you sound like you are going to be the kind of engineer that signed off on the dell laptop batteries. you do have to have full coverage on a car you are making payments on. and between gas insurance and payments on a kid that sounds like he has no credit youll be shelling out a good 1,000 a month. i spend 6 a month on my base between 316$ payments 150$ gas and 140$ insurance. granted i financed for 3.5 years, drive around 100 miles a day and i get 36mpg and have no tickets, but youll also need super unleaded and i dont. not to mention upkeep on the ss is more expensive. factor in the tires and clutches, since you seem to be an expert driving a stick you wont have to worry about this, even tho everyone else has problems im sure you can drive a standard better than every other SS driver. and speeding tickets since all you talk about is the power. also if you have to take a loan longer than 4 years you cant afford the car. just because they let you take out a loan for 6-10 years doesnt mean its a good idea. everyone here tells you to wait or get a cheaper car and you keep looking for an excuse to buy something you cant afford. you have the rest of your life to buy a nice fast car. if all you have is a mcjob and are going in to college then all you need is reliable transportation. i had 2 mcjobs and was in college when i bought my base and im still happy with it even tho i was recently had a chance to buy an 06 SS/SC with 9000 miles on it for 18. i can afford it but the mature person in me realized i already have a hotrod at home that could stomp a 4 cylinder econobox and look better doing it. buy an ls, turbo it later and be happy you didnt buy an ss. or at least get the non sc'd SS. and the ls's now have 148hp

and just one more thing. any car is a waste of money, do you want a big waste of money or a little waste of money. nothing else you buy will lose its value quicker and cost so much to keep up. except maybe a trailer(mobile home)

Wait dude. There will be much nicer cars in the future, hence more women will be attracted to them. So keep your chips. Nothing worst that having your insurances sky rocket because of some stupid idiot that trashed your car and got away with it and then you cant afford. Or like buying gas and not having any money left...

Why not lease a base cobalt? then in 3 years when the lease is up buy your SS you want, or whatever you might be drooling over by then (Camaro?)?
