WTF I think I am getting screwed

so i found out to just drive around legally in my 1988 golf my insurance is like 4700 a year or ~360 a month from guess who...safe auto, wtf? they push it as being really cheap; I'm not paying 360 a month to drive a car that i got for a trade of a set of wheels...what is a dirt cheap insurance.

Can you get USAA? Do you have any direct family in the military? They are priced very fairly( I pay 450 every 6 months for the Cobalt SS/SC) and with my recent accident the are awsome!

Did you make it a second car or weekend car, and put minimum coverage on it? If they think its your primary car, you will be charged a lot.

You only need liability on a 1988 Golf.
If that's liability only, either you've had 80,000 tickets, you've hit several pedestrians, or you are getting hosed.

Yes, I'd discourage you from using SafeAuto if you don't have to. Another thing you want to make sure you have from an insurance company is trust in their ability to stand up for you if you're in an accident and the niceness of their folks if you file a cliam.
I also priced them because they claimed to be so cheap.. it was twice as much as Geico.

I've found for me that USAA is by far the cheapest, followed closely by Geico (about $350 more per year) and then the rest. If you can become a member of USAA any way possible - do it, they also offer very good Savings accounts, investments, free checking (they refund ATM fees to you) and they are INCREDIBLY nice. Best bank/insurer I've ever dealt with.

Also, if you're a young, single guy I'd highly discourage you from going through a local insurer. Most of the time you will get raped.

"Full coverage". What a joke. You need to know the elements of coverage. the term "full coverage" means nothing.

You need liability and uninsured motorist. Minimum should be around $300K/100K/50K. More is better. UNINSURED OR UNDERINSURED coverage is a MUST.

You should have comprehensive. Check deductible on this, should be low...like $0, $50, or $100 at best. $0 is good if not too expensive.
On an old car, you can drop collision. If your car is relatively new, you should add collision, and the deductible should be no smaller than $500, or $1000 if you can afford it.

You need medical if you have no medical insurance.
You need rental if you don't have a 2nd vehicle you can use.

Thats it...stop talking cost, start talking coverage limits.

i'm 20 and i pay like 320 every 6 months through my family insurance...American Family. optional airbags lowered it 40 bucks and i also have 500 deduct.

btw: my car is almost 20 years newer than yours... so i think you might be getting the short end of the stick here.

You pay $320...FOR WHAT LIMITS?

Saying you pay $xxx means nothing. To compare policies, you need to know the limits and line items.

Something no one has pointed out yet is that insurance costs vary widely from place to place, even within the same state sometimes. What you pay can also be affected by your credit score and other odd variables. So really, knowing what other people pay for their insurance does you no good. I suggest grabbing a phone book and shopping around for the best value for whatever your coverage needs are.

^^ Exactly. Shop around. Spend an afternoon and call them all, and go with the cheapest.

For whoever was talking about uninsured/underinsured motorist.. I kinda disagree this is a neccessity. You're comprehensive/collision should cover this and your insurance company will take them to court *if* you live in a state that requires insurance (I think most do..). There's no way an insurance company would make YOU pay for an accident that WASN'T your fault because the other driver didn't have insurance, that's just crazy.

Also, check with lienholder when you're pricing out. Some may have requirements on what type of coverage/amount of deductible you should have.
