Yur A Peeing Cobalt?

Check out this kids...

Jason Stein | Automotive News / March 19, 2007

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - General Motors is harmonizing its Chevrolet nameplates, as well as its retail processes, around the world.

The strategy coincides with the introduction of GM's next compact-car global architecture and Chevrolet's growth outside North America.

The United States, Canada and Mexico now account for two-thirds of Chevrolet sales worldwide. But within a decade, the division expects to make most of its sales outside North America.

"Then we will be truly global," said John Middlebrook, GM's vice president for global sales, service and marketing.

"Our regions haven't lined up very well in the past, but that's changing," Middlebrook said at a press event at the Geneva auto show.

"There are opportunities to unify a lot more as our platforms go global."

By 2010, GM plans to launch its next-generation global architecture for compact cars. Before then, GM wants to harmonize Chevrolet nameplates, create common dealer standards for the brand's retail network and use global marketing messages.

In the past, GM ran sales, service and marketing by country and region. The company now is benchmarking global processes by Mercedes and BMW to simplify its own strategy.

A global Chevrolet marketing council with one representative from each of GM's four regions will make decisions about vehicle names and key marketing points. Middlebrook chairs that council. But that group's policies must win approval from the Global Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing council, which GM CEO Rick Wagoner chairs.

GM is studying the global use of the North American nameplate Cobalt. In Europe, Chevrolet now calls its corresponding compact car the Lacetti.

Similarly, under GM's new compact-car architecture, Chevrolet will use the Aveo nameplate globally. In some European markets, the Aveo is called the Kalos.

GM will extend its global strategy to marketing, advertising and promotions. The company could use major international events, such as the Olympics, to promote global messages. GM also could use international celebrities to sell Chevrolet around the world.
