Jeez, I'm trying to change this thing again and it's not working. I can't seem to disconnect the fuel line. I am using the grey 3/8 disconnect tool and it just doesn't seem to go in far enough inside the old filter. I push as hard as I can and nothing. I don't understand why it's so easy for everyone. I'm assuming the tool is supposed to go in completely but mine doesn't seem to want to.

Any advice would be appreciated? Is it the blue disconnect tool ? 5/16 I believe?

 

I don't remember which disconnect it is, but only one fits. You have to push it in then kind of hold it in with one hand and pull the line out with the other hand. You have to give it a little tug, but you shouldn't have to pull too hard to get it out.

 

I needed to get a metal release tool. The plastic one just did nothing but bend and not its job.
hope no one else runs into that. Here's what worked for me

 

I did this yesterday. Its a very awkward spot to get the leverage to get the fuel line off.

P.S. Remember to reconnect the fuel line until it clicks.... That was the worst sounding engine/leak i have everheard.

you don't have to change these every 30 like normal filters. these filters have a pressure regulator in them and that is why they are so expensive.

I think I'll be bringing it to the dealer to get it done. Is it a problem if I already have the filter? Shouldn't it only take them like 10 minutes? How much should it cost me for just the time?

 

I looked online with Oreillys and Advanced and neither had a listing for the fuel filter. What gives.

 

I have a champion labs part number if it helps, G6640.

 

Autozone has the filter, and I sell it here at Levine Auto and Truck parts. Luberfiner # g6640 or ff4002 if that helps

 

to figure out dealer pricing, call some other shops, and double or triple the price. if it's not warranty work, you should never go to the dealer.

when doin this u may want to make sure ur not downhill from the filter area b/c the gas remainin in the lines and filter are goin to pour out when disconnectin everythin

 

my dealer said 30k is when they recommend replacement

 

Thanks a lot for this how to man it helped me out a lot. I have an 07 with 36000 miles on it and i just did mine yesterday but i couldnt realy tell if mine was dirty or not i didnt see any black gunk like some people mentioned... Oh well it was kind of a PITA gettin the one connection off that uses the fuel line disconnect tool but i finally got some leverage on it and yanked it off there. At first i didnt think my car was gonna die after i removed the relay but it eventually did after like 45 seconds but a **** ton of gas still dumped out on my arm when i popped off the two quik connect fittings. I used the autozone filter for 15 bucks and it seems to be workin fine.

 

I might need to do this, I'm sitting at more than 70k mi.....oops....

 

I changed mine yesterday. All went well except for the fact when I went to start the car it turned over but no pressure on the fuel rail. It turned out that I put the relay in the set of slots one above. So remember when you put the relay back back in it's the set of slots closest to the 15 amp fuse.

 

Just did mine as well.

Autozone filter and the light blue colored fuel line disconnect tool (3/8" if I recall correctly) FTW.

Also, if you can let the car sit overnight and change the fuel filter the next day, there will be even less pressure left in the system.

We pulled the relay on my buddy's 'Balt and let her idle till she died, but there was still a fair amount of pressure left in the lines. If you let it sit overnight, a little gas dribbles out, but it's not bad.

 

well i just got mine done too

but when you do let it idle to die you can unscrew your gas cap and it releases the pressure faster so than the gas doesn't come out so bad.

great how to. and you can buy the fuel filter at auto zone for like 13 bucks or so.

 

This is pretty common and easy to do. I actually put the relay back in the wrong slot myself and couldn't figure out why my fuel system wouldn't pressurize. Banged my head on the wall for like half an hour messing with things till I realized that there are a set or empty holes right above the relay. I don't know why GM didn't block those holes off so you can't put the relay back in the wrong place... lol

 

forget the fuel injector cleaner etc... that will only cause any blockage to get worse overtime... seafoam once a year or WOT once a month to clean out the carbon build up...

Hello everyone. I wanted to add to this thread. I did my fuel filter today. The 3rd metal line I had to remove was a bitch. I am adding some pictures of how it works in hope to save over people some heartache.

First Pic - This is the fuel filter of course. The two lines sticking out are easy to disconnect. There are two blue tabs on the lines that run to them. depress both buttons and it un snaps.


Second pic - In this picture I added a pic off the 3rd pipe that runs into the filter. If you look at the end of the filter you will notice there are several butterfly style tabs just inside the opening


3rd pic - This is the disconnect tool I got at autozone. It's a 3/8". It came in a pack of 4 and is metal.


4th pic - This picture shows that the tool has a neck on it that actually fits inside that opening. To take the pipe of the filter you will open the tool, fit it around the pipe and push the neck into the filter.

5th pic - I took this to show that the neck fits in the end, when removing pipe from car you would have a pipe going straight out from the filter.


This yellow tool when push into the hole pressing the butterfly tabs back and allows the pipe to release from the filter. Make sure to push the filter all the way to the drivers side, insert tool, clamp and pull the filter towards the passenger side.

I hope this helps out a lot. My dad was pissed thinking I was breaking my car until I figured this out on my own.
