How To: Rebuild Front SS/SC Brake Calipers

I picked up some junk yard front calipers to put on my 08 SS so I can run slicks. Well, with them being junk yard parts, I wasn't comfortable just putting them on the car, so I decided to rebuild them. A rebuild kit costs about $10 per caliper. This is very cheap insurance, since your life pretty much depends on it.

First, the tools you will need are
- A punch (or screwdriver if you don't have one the right size).
- Rubber Mallet.
- Sockets (10mm,and 11mm, 13m) and a ratchet.
- Vise (unless you have really good grip!).

First, take the pads out and get your bearings with the caliper, if you are not already familiar.

Second, Put the caliper in the Vise, take the Banjo bolt and caliper slide bolts out. The caliper will basically fall into 2 pieces now.

Give the slides a god tug, and they will come out.

Next, take the bleeder bolt out, as it could be corroded much like mine was.

Put the caliper back in the vise, and take your punch or screwdriver and put it in the banjo bolt hole. This will push the piston out the other side. Give this a real firm push, or give it some taps with a hammer. It might be a bit stubborn to get out, depending on the shape of your caliper.

The caliper will slide out, much like this. As you can see, my dust seal was torn, so I am going to have to replace that (I believe it comes in the rebuild kit).

Pull the seal off the top of the piston using a small regular screwdriver.

And lastly, take a small screwdriver, or a seal hook tool (w/e its called) and pull out the oil seal in the caliper. This will be replaced with the rebuild kit as well.

After this, I would recommend soaking the parts in a heavy duty, degreaser/parts cleaner. This will get all the grime off the parts, and will allow you to paint the calipers if you want.

I will show how to put it all back together when I get my rebuild kits in. CED should be able to get them, of not, GMpartsdirect has them.

Would this apply to the rear caliper also? My rear, passenger side is frozen closed... and pretty sure the pads are gone
