Been working on my car like crazy to get through echeck (I have to pass the sniffer, the old way). I go tomorrow, wish me luck! Take a hard 30 minute drive pull up to the place and hopefully pass! I went back to a few stock pieces so hopefully this gets me to driving it around to see you guys this summer!
Why can't you do the computer test?
Listen to Dirty. He's the expert at "trying" to avoid E-Check. I think we visited about 4-5 different e-checks to try and get his EVO to pass. In the end, he moved to a county that doesn't require e-check lol
Ya see thats were im fucked when i come home i dont have a catted DP only a catless and i have a new turbo kit and a catted dp is like 400 bucks...do the echecks still do the sniff test or only the plug in gas cap test i cant remember
If there are CEL codes, you fail.
If ECU bits are not in a state of ready, then they sniff test it.
It's not so much the tune. It's turning off the bits and codes that their computer searches for. The bits that read "ready" as in "everything is fine", are the ones that it searches for, on top of CELs.
Certain tunes will disable CEL bits by putting them in a permanent state of "unready" so the CEL never turns on. These will cause them to have to sniff it.
Other tunes will disable the CEL's through other means. These tunes can pass.
While other tunes do nothing to CEL bits. These will pass if there are no CEL codes and fail if there are.
It also depends on when the car was tuned. If a car was freshly flashed, or has been sitting for a long time with a dead battery, the ECU has reset and all the bits are set to "unready" while the ECU recalibrates for environmental conditions, fuel conditions, and driving habits. Once all those bits have "readied" it'll pass.
My experience is it takes about 50 miles of driving and/or a couple hours of engine on time for the bits to become ready. But it varies vehicle-to-vehicle and I know very little about Cobalts in that respect.
You are correct about the sniff part. My computer had a few parts that were not ready as a CEL was just cleared. I failed 2 echecks but passed today with flying colors. I am now good to go for all driving purposes. I hope to see a few balts around and about this summer in the Akron area. Good luck with the sniff test if you have to. They definitely do an inspection for a cat. If they plug into the obd and get nothing then you pass and all is good.

Also, I seen a Victory Red TC driving down 77 South today, just a little past Broadway. Anyone?
I had 2 people with mirrors looking under my car today. Mine is lowered pretty good but they still were checking for a cat. I believe that it is state law to have a cat. I would either make a shell and bolt it on to look like one or unfortunately find a catted downpipe. Good Luck!
Yes, a catted down pipe is needed during the E Check. If they see something funny, they will dig deeper.
When I had my truck checked last year, they looked for both cats, one on each side.
Lifter, you are just special. Was the Victory Red TC a sedan or a coupe? I have seen a Sedan around.

I know people who have passed w/o catalytic converts. I know someone that passed a sniff test with no cats (E85)!
It depends on how cool the technician is, how low your car is, and if the technician likes the car.
