Help, I am new and need your experience please!

Hey every one, I am new to Cobalt's but not new to cars at all, I have built a few forced induction cars but never a 4 cylinder.

I work at a Chevy dealership as a technician, and in our used car lot there has been this 2005 red chevy cobalt SS/SC for 3 months.

At first I really liked it, until I drove it. It had a few issues (to many issues for the price.)

but now it has been another month and we still have it and the price is in my grasp to where I could look past its flaws.

Here is the run down of the car.

2005 SS/SC red with red/black interior.
115k miles, all stock except cosmetics.

at first they wanted 6700$
3 months later it is down to 4900$
since I work there and know the guy well enough
I could most likely get the car for 4 grand.
I would like to know if that is a good price to over look the miles.

The GOOD.
New tires, paint is good no dents
New brakes, car runs well except it bogs or dips at idle so I am guessing throttle body is all gummed up with blow by.

The BAD
quarter size rust spot on door just a little bubble under the paint but body shop said 50$ to fix it.
needs a new muffler, the after market one is way to loud.
front bumper plastic thing that goes down under neath is gone.
shifter seems really loose and insecure.
2nd gear synchro grinds, but might just be the shifter loose.
shift boot is torn.
needs new interior radio trim ring, its painted red.

do you guys think this is worth 4 grand???
i would trade in my current DD and they will give me 2200, so i would owe 1800 on it

Does it have the G85 option? Assuming it does, with the two tone interior, but pop the trunk and look under the carpet on the driver side. There is a tag. Look for G85. That is the LSD option. I sold my Black Stage II non LSD car for 3500 with 103k miles. The car ran great, but needed paint. I would say it should be at least in that area, FYI with rust, if it has a bubbled rust area, then expect a lot more of it around that area, and in other places on the car. I see GM still hasn't gotten the rust issue fixed. They have been bad since the 60s. Little things like the boot rotting is normal. The shifter feeling sloppy is usually the cables needing adjusting. There are threads on how to do that. I did it to mine, and it helped. Anyways I am sure more people will help. Welcome! Post pics of the car if you have it.

okay so I drove the car home and around town a lot, I am liking the gas mileage a lot more than my 3000gt lol.

at idle it has started to make a diesel noise which I gather to be the timing chain/tensioner.

other than that the car is pretty good, needs some fixes, like the blacked out tail lights and other bull **** that looks and is stupid.

I told the dealer ship "fix it and i'll buy it" they sent it down the hall to my buddy craig so it is in good hands! hopefully I can drive it home permanently tomorrow.

I don't think two tone interior is a sighn of g85 option. Unless that was only in 05.
Recaros would mean g85

Correct. Two tone interior back in 05' & 06' meant none G85.

In late 07', G85 came with the standard seats.

Fix it, Buy it, Drive it, Love it. Mine is my summer daily driver. Winters in the Mitten are to harsh for these soft paint cars.

What model 3000gt do you have?

Any idea what's been done to it modification wise? Post some pictures of how it sits, the exhaust, possibly a picture of the springs and under hood pics as well.

hey guys, so to clear up some question…it has new struts, new brakes and new tires…

I have a VR4 3000gt (AWD TT) and a non turbo dodge stealth (mild build).

To sum up the cobalt…unfortunately craig took a very close look at it, he said it needs a timing chain and tensioner, he also said while I'm in there I might as well do the water pump chain and tensioner.

the dealership (with my discount) said 500$ to do it, let me tell you guys I can not justify paying 4k for a car, plus 500$ to get it going again, that is not including the tail lights it needs and the cat back exhaust it needs.

I am fully capable of doing the labor my self..so my final question for all of you is, how long does it take to do both chains/tensioners. and what is needed to do it?

I know how to set timing on interference motors so there is no issue there.

the full kit (not including valve cover gasket) through the dealership is 125$.

you have to understand, really wish I had a picture of this car…..the previous kid that owned it blacked out the tail lights so much! that black paint dripped off on onto the bumper! the lights are so dark I will get pulled over once in every county, and the exhaust is straight piped to a resonator and SLP tip

I just tinted mine cherry red ...I did hate the OEM clown red.

It looks okay on a red car though.

Whatever you do just keep the VR-4 as a nice weekend car.
