Ok here's the DL... everything is legal till the cops show up for one... if you go NOS brand you are going with the market... because of it's use in the Fast and the Furious, it is all hype... NX is a great kit if you are not looking into a computerized kit... Zex offers a great kit also... Venom is the best computer controlled kit offered...

No.
People blow up cars on nitrous, nitrous doesn't do anything but what its told to to.
The Ecotec was forced feed nitrous in 3 stages up and over 400hp and did about 270hp on the chassis dyno before all 4 rods broke.
You can SAFELY RUN a 100hp shot on a DEAD STOCK Ecotec and will run for a LONG, LONG TIME with weekly use on the bottle.
If I had a dime for everytime somebody that has never used nitrous posted on a board about it being harmful to your engine and useless I would be a very, very rich man.
Those that choose to run slowly, go ahead.
In the meantime, anybody thats serious can -
The Nitrous Works EFI kit - $475
The Nitrous Works Max Pack Kit - $200 (Bottle Heater, Pressure Gauge, Blowdown Tube and NHRA/IHRA blowoff cap)
Truebenz 2.5" exhaust system with Magnaflow straight through Muffler - $300
15" Steelies - $100
BFG 225/50-15' G-Force Drag Radials - $230
You could run mid to low 13's with an otherwise STOCK Cobalt.
If you have an LS, you already about 200lbs lighter than the SS....
Take out the rear seats, pass seat, spare and jack/tool. That should be worth another tenth of a second, maybe more.
Don't talk about it, just do it....
Read the GM Ecotec Handbook, even THEY recommend a small nitrous system and sorry but 100hp shot is SMALL when you consider most Pro Mod cars are injecting over 800-900hp if not more in 2-3 stage systems.

I have a NOS question...I heard a rumor that anyone who uses NOS should also invest in high performance pistons to prevent the rings from frying....is that true?, or bullshit

Down the road nitrous might be nice. 75hp shot

NO2 goes both ways. Just from being fed through the engine it wont kill anything. Yes there is more stress on the engine, but it wont do more damage then running throttle wide open to red line every gear. (ive seen how imports are driven). And yes it will even cool the engine. BUT that is if its mixed right. To combust an engine needs three thinks. Fuel, ignitor, and air. nitrous is air, thus increasing air flow. with out proper octane or more fuel volume, the engine runs lean and then actually heats up. more engines go this way by eating rings and even holes in pistons. too find a kit, SUMMIT could be a good place to look.

I would like to give props to DJ4monie and olddude for giving not only correct information, but also detailed information Unfortunatly, Im sure there are still some people that will hate on nitrous because they know nothing about it and refuse to believe you cant run more than a 50 shot to a stock ECOTEC

To the best of my knowledge, it is illegal to transport nitrous oxide anywhere in the US. You have to get a permit allowing you to transport it, but I don't think that permit allows you to have a car running on nitrous on the road. It's "for offroad applications only."
However, my only advice on nitrous that I will give (since the rest has been said) is that it is not for amateurs. If you don't know what you're doing and have no way of monitoring your A/F accurately DO NOT EVEN BOTHER!

In California, Nitrous is legal for non polution controlled cars that MAY be used on the street.
IE: If your driving your car to the track with your kit, its legal. If you can provide recent time slips to an officer I bet you won't get a ticket. If they know anything about nitrous then they would know its a pain in the butt to disconnect it all the time...
