Hear the latest news, get updates on recent developments.
NOW is the TIME. Please don’t miss THIS. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW. Come with your street rod, bike or family car, crawl, skate, hitch a ride, doesn‘t matter how you get there. Please drop everything and show up on March 18 for the future of Motorsports on Long Island. You will not be sorry.

Yeah man... started that thread a few weeks ago...... bunch of us are meeting up....
from what I've heard top Gun isn't going to be doing the track anymore. mainly this is just going to be a meet now, but it would be good to show support since I know someone else is bidding on building a new track out in riverhead.

Dear Constituent:
Thank you for taking the time to contact my office to express your support for a drag strip in Suffolk County. Please note that the main component for the development of the Yaphank property was always intended to be workforce housing that could be used to help stem the exodus of Suffolk’s young population who can no longer afford to live here.
The lack of affordable housing has been identified as one of the biggest problems facing Long Island residents and a major factor contributing to the loss of our younger population. In addition, the high cost of housing impedes economic growth. Since the price of land is the single biggest factor in the high cost of housing, by utilizing County-owned property, we can subsidize the cost of the project and make the units more affordable. It is hoped these “starter homes” will allow our residents the opportunity to establish a housing foothold while they begin their careers and progress to bigger homes as they build a family.
The issuance of the Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) and the focus of the public hearings and the committee review process were to examine the feasibility of the other components that could be included in the development of the property. It was hoped that the remaining acreage could be used to construct other “destination-type” recreation, such as a multi-purpose arena, that would be compatible with the housing component. At the same time, the County had to retain a portion of the property as undeveloped land, held in reserve for future County use and expansion. As the review process progressed it became apparent that the amount of available acreage remaining was configured in a way that made the inclusion of a drag strip or oval race track unfeasible.
The property at Yaphank is broken into three different parcels and is in close proximity to many residents. It was therefore impossible to site a NASCAR-type track at this location. I nevertheless believe that motor enthusiasts should have the opportunity to safely and legally practice their sport. That is why I proposed an innovative indoor ATV – motocross arena at the site. You may wish to continue to seek an outdoor site at a bigger and more secluded Riverhead location.
To that end, you may wish to contact Top Gun, a pro-racing development group, which may be attempting to construct a drag strip on Town-owned property (EPCAL) in Riverhead. At this time, the Town is reviewing various bids from respondents to develop subdivisions of the property. Although, as County Executive, my office has no jurisdiction over the Town’s decisions in this matter, you may wish to contact Phil Cardinale, Supervisor of Riverhead Town, to express your support for a drag strip at this location.
I hope this information helps clarify the matter. Please feel free to contact my office if I may be of assistance in the future.
Sincerely,
Steve Levy
County Executive
