A) 30HP more means 30HP more than you'll start with on the LS2. You think that you'd keep the Camaro stock?
B) It's a newer (better) motor period. There are plenty of improvements over the LS2.
C) The Camaro looks a hell of a lot better anyway. Retro-design FTMFW.
D) If I were you, I'd be concerned about how much I'm paying for a year old "brand new" car.
E) Why not wait and get a car that you are 100% sure you want? Choose your options... including transmission.

Eh, just my take on it. And rest assured I'm not biased... I wanted a GTO last year.

I'm going to have to agree with Mr. Pazzemechimeritski. I know my next car will be a GM V8 rwd and I wouldn't mind trading up now but I think in the long run I would be much happier with the next gen GMs that are going to be released in 08-09. Of course this is all hedging on whether or not GM and dealers gouge the living **** out of people with the new cars.

Camaro will most likely weigh nearly as much as the current gen gto as well and will have an independent rear suspension too, so I'm guessing it will be tricky to launch just like the goat. Then again, you'll probably be able to stuff much bigger tires under the new Camaro without having to roll fender lips and so on, so that will at least give it more traction.

My opinion, if you want a manual transmission, hold off for one. I've never actually driven an automatic gto, and I'm sure they're cool (just from riding in Matt's and how the suspension preloads when you put it into D), but me personally, I would only buy an automatic if I was only going to use the car for drag racing.

Sure, the automatic has a lot of benefits - being lazy and not having to shift and so on, but an 05/06 gto with drive by wire makes the manual transmission very easy to drive. Ease the clutch out from a stoplight without giving it any gas and the car will pull forward without stalling, leave it in 4th or 5th gear going up hills and it won't bog, or I can even leave it in 3rd gear making a 90 degree turn without it bogging too much. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't have to shift as much if you don't want to because it has so much torque.

Plus you'll get better gas mileage with the 6-speed, if that matters to you. Personally, I never would have bought my car if I was worried about gas mileage, but I actually averaged 26.8mpg on the highway driving home from State College this weekend

Edit: I agree with the others too, it would be awesome to hold off for a Camaro, but I'm guessing there will be a lot of price gouging going on the first year. So the question is, get a car now and have it for 3 years, or wait until 2010 when a Camaro sells for a normal price

A "good deal" is only a good deal if you want what is being offered. If you want a manual, then there really isn't a good enough deal to make you happy with an automatic in the long run. My guess is that if you have to ask what you should do, then you shouldn't do it - it's your money not ours, so spend it on what you want and not what anyone here thinks.

If you can get what you feel is a good deal on an auto, then I'm sure you will find an equally good deal on a stick.

Good luck

Sounds like my car, too

Only beef I have with auto is any auto I've driven, so far, has been stupid, or indecisive, and tuned for MPG. I'm aware there are some great autos out there, that can be smart, but I haven't driven one, yet. Sometimes I don't want to downshift, or upshift, just yet. I like the control I have driven a Maxima and 330i w/ auto-stick, and that was decent. I suppose in that case, other factors come in...like, having a manual, less weight and chance of getting the car stolen. And easy for me to deny most people who want to drive or, if I'm an ass, offer them the chance, knowing 90% of peeps poop their pants when they see a clutch.

I must say, though, 2.4 Dan's car shifts pretty damn quick, after rl Dan had its way with it.
