It's snowed twice where I live. not worth it for ke to get snow tires for the two times this year that it did snow and it wasn't even that much. Compare it to last year where al it did was snow for months. Weather here is unpredictable

then for you they may not be worth it but up here, mn, wi, mi, canada, ny etc. they are almost required. so you saying you dont need them doesnt compare to someone in MI saying that.

In Quebec its actually law. vehicle registered there arent allowed to be used in the winter without snow tires! there are many other areas that have laws that mandate snow tires or chains if the roads are snow covered.( Nevada, Oregon and Cali all come to mind, with Yosemite actually having even stricter rules and penalties than the rest of the state)

Last I heard we actually had laws against snow chains here. The last time I saw snow chains they were on that artic trucking show Before that in reality... it was probably back when I was a kid. But I could be wrong.

in alberta they are thinking of doing something similar to germany, because it shouldn't be just the government taking the full blame for stupid peoples accidents. so here if you want to run around on all seasons and you get into an accident then your fines are doubled if you don't have winter tires, something along those lines. as i think the gov't said that they could spend billions on snow removal and all the preventitive measures known to man but if someone is driving stupid they can't do anything about that other then fine them. at some point people have to start taking responsibility. mind you i would like to actually see calgary do some preventitive measures for once. rather then taking a week to make the roads semi-decent again.

in germany all season tires are fine, even if you get in an accident. when you get in an accident with summer tires on the other hand its your fault.

Just like a proper performance tire is needed to best autox safely and quickly, a winter tire is needed best drive safely and securely in sub freezing weather and when the roads are snow or ice covered. Stopping distances with all seaon tires are anywhere between 15 and 50% greater than with snow tires, thats a HUGE difference. Same goes for acceleration and turning. Just google snow tires versus all seaon tires and you will find innumerable articles all pointing to one thing.....all season tires arent the proper tire once the temp drops.
The one thing that I greatly noticed was the braking distance between all season and winter tires. Last year on all season, even stopping very lightly I was sliding around a bit. With the winter tires, it just stops almost as if there isn't any snow or ice on the ground.

My snow tires grip so well that it takes EXTREME measures to even get the car loose. ESC Off, massive Scandanavian Flick combined with an abrupt lift off the throttle, and still the car only steps out a little bit before immediately biting and recovering.

Yeah, and regardless of state laws people should be talking to their insurance companies becuase there are companies that wont cover an accident that takes places on snow or ice if the car isnt equipped with snow tires.........And I am pretty sure that in NJ its against the law to run summer tires from December-March.

good point, one of the reasons i have european insurance, they'll cover me if i wreck on the ring cause its a toll road

and back on the topic of snow tires, i just drove my wifes car(nissan micra) in the snow with snow tires and it sucked ***** compared to the balt with all season tires. i don't condone the use of all season tires, its just the risk i take.

Maybe you gotta move out of suffolk and into nassau. In nassau the biggest hill youll find is leaving your drivway. Plus suffolk sucks, why do you want to be there anyway.

I've been stressing for years the importance of SNOW tires. Not all seasons, SNOW tires. Let me say it again, SNOW tires. Yesterday driving up route 23 going north (anyone that knows the vernon area knows we get **** tons more snow than most of jersey, especially highland lakes which is literally on the top of a mountain) the roads were not plowed, I was the ONLY person in the fast lane, and I wasn't slipping at all. Trucks were pulling over because they couldn't drive, and my car felt like the road was clean and clear. Makes ALL the difference. I have a 7 mile drive up the side of a mountain to get home, it wasn't plowed, and I had zero issues.

snow tires are NOT overkill, because they don't get as hard as all seasons. So even in clear road conditions, snow tires will still outperform all seasons.

get AWD and any tires you want.

This. Even for areas where the roads are normally well-kept and bare, go with high-performance winter tires.

yeah I was going to bring that up. I think its a pretty good law considering it probably saves lots of people from accidents. I also think the northern states should have winter driving test/lessons for people getting licenses. Or do it for the whiners in insurance discounts, if you have winter tires = discount, or you take a winter driving lesson another discount etc. Something so people know winter tires are better and having them is a better idea.

AWD without snow tires will merely ensure you're going faster when you slam into the inevitable ditch, tree, car, or child.

Enjoy your repair bill and/or guilty conscience.

I disagree. I have a 4x4 escape and it came with highway all seasons and WOW they sucked ass in snow. I ordered snow tires/wheels and its a night and day difference. Awd wont help stopping or any handling if the tires suck.

Aww, are u butthurt that fail wheel drive isnt as good in the snow? Sorry to disappoint you, but the all seasons I have on there handle better than a cobalt with winter tires ( I would know I have driven both ). AWD = straight through snow, not swerving around on the road and getting stuck. All I do is hit the "SNOW" option for the ACD and Im good to go.

If anyone is going to kill someone it will be you and your lack of control to go straight on slushy or snow covered roads. I have already driven through multiple blizzards this season, and the car is perfect in it. I also live in WNY where we get tons of snow, so yea u really dont know what the hell youre talking about. I have never been in a winter accident with WORSE handling cars, so yea go stick that in ur pipe and smoke it.

I agree if the tires suck, then its no good. If you have some good all seasons, they handle good, as well as winter tires. Winter tires arent necessary, you can use other tires, you just have to know how to drive.

driver skill > tires

Lets face it, most people dont know how to drive let alone drive in snow and ice. I made it through a buffalo winter on blad pirellis on my LSJ with little issue. Driver skill is key.

AWD > FWD in snow/rain/ice. People dont use FWD cars to tow out cars do they? Last I checked trucks that did better in the winter were 4x4?

ANYWAY

enough threadjacking. Get some blizzaks. Theyre priceier, but worth every penny if you want a solid rubber thats good in the snow:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...50&tireIndex=0

$175 a tire, but worth it for the winter.

Dont drive them on the highway during the spring/summer though. Theyre terrible for cruising.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd MUCH rather have AWD in the snow... But I'd still get snow tires. My fail-wheel-drive econobox will easily outhandle your Evo in snow thanks to the tires, whether you like it or not. Good all-seasons DO NOT match the performance of proper winters. There's dozens of objective tests making this painfully clear.

Driver skill is key, but assuming you and I are equal drivers, I'll still do far better because I use the proper tools.

If you can afford an Evo how are you that poor that you can't afford snow tires? I'm not the one who sounds butthurt here.

Who says I cant afford winter tires? You just answered your ignorant statement in the same sentence. Why buy them if you dont need them? I have awsome all seasons, I dont need winters.

AWD + good all seasons + adjustible LSD > FWD + winter tires

Are you forgetting that I have 2 extra wheels spinning, and the LSD give is adjustible with the push of a button? As I said, all I have to do is hit the "SNOW" setting, and Im good to go. Uphill through no joking around a foot of snow and slush no problems. As I said, it handles better than my LSJ did with winter tires on it. I can also drive through the stuff without losing control of my car because I know how to drive it.

Regardless, all bets are off when youre driving on a layer of snow/ice. IDC what tires/WD you have. You either know how to drive in it, or you end up in a ditch. This means being cautious, courteous, and going slow if needed. No tires will save a shitty driver especially in our winters. I dont care if youre running $100000000 winter tires, and have all the nanny features in the world on your car.

As I said, driver skill is what gets you through winters. Like driving a RWD cobra with bald summer tires through multiple ice and snow storms. That was fun...
