Where can I race my car in NJ?

I'm starting to get interested in racing my car on a track other than just having a little fun on the street. I've never done/looked into anything like this before so I really don't know much about it. I think I'd be more interested in racing around like a track, instead of just down a straight 1/4 mile. Does that make sense at all? Is it possible for me to find a place where I can race my car around the track just against the clock?

Well since your on the North Eastern side of NJ id suggest Englishtown Raceway also known as Old Bridge Raceway. Thats probably 30-40mins away from you. Other than that there is Island Dragway in Great Meadows, NJ and Atco raceway in Atco, NJ atco being 2 hrs away Island being about 1 hr from you

Do I need a special type of license or take a class? At raceway park it looked like they had what I wanted, but from what I read it seems like I need to take a class. Am I right?

if its an open track day event then you just have to tech your car for road racing, thats rare though, auto x you have to get techd and classed, if you want to race at the drag strip at englishtown all you need to do is show up

Yes the NJMP track , however thats a professional track and you need to be apart of a SCCA chapter or another track group to get on the track. plus it costs about 300 bucks for one day and it really puts a beating on your car, not really for novices bc you have to do alot of pre and post race maintenance.
