First Shots With A Nikon D40
Okay, so I must be doing something wrong. My pictures came out horrible with the auto shoot mode.
I don't want any insults either. This is for constructive criticism only.
This was my first attempt at using a DSLR.

And dont shoot in AUTO, try shooting in M. Self adjust the numbers to make it work and in raw mode you can upload them into photoshop or editing programs and adjust the levels if they are messed up a bit.
Check out ReignSS's photography how-to thread its very helpful.
If you have any questions about features on the D40 shoot me a PM.

Here's a picture shooting in manual mode and correcting the aperture and shutter speed myself

Does anyone know where I can download photoshop for free for my Mac?

much better the best thing i can say to you is buy a tripod because it will really help everything out. And make sure its a decent tripod not a cheap one. i had an ebay one that broke after about a month.

Nice pictures are not about having a nice camera, people can take amazing pictures with a simple point and shoot 2MP camera (MP are not everything BTW). Auto mode is usually never used by a experienced photographer. Good pictures are about lighting and knowing what your doing. Take time to get used to your camera, your not going to be able to just go snap amazing pics the second you pick up a camera. Learn how use the correct settings and it will net you better pictures. Also, if you dont already have a tripod get one, and a polarizer to cut down on reflections.
I just saw in your post that you did use a polarizer, good job! Trying shooting in M mode and using different settings. When I go out to take pictures I take the same picture a ton of times and make little changes with each picture untill I am satisifed with the result.
