I run a photolab and print "professional photographers photos" 90% of them photoshop the hell out of their pics (and mess them up) because they don't know how to compose a good picture then try to fix them and make them worse. The true skill is taking a good pic and not relying on photoshop to attempt to improve it. I refer to them as "photoshoppers" not photographers.

Also if you see these "professional photographers" pictures 90% of the time and they are to over processed and they don't know how to compose their pic's, then they aren't really professional's.
The professional's I know edit their pic's, not because they screwed up on a pic but to make the pic better than what it really is.

Regardless of what you shoot, there is always something that can be done to the picture to make it better while you are post processing.

well we could look at it like this, because alot of photographers are loosing there photo taking skills to photoshop, their pictures can be compared to a cobalt, a decent looking car from the factory but moding it will make it look better because the factory did not do that great of a job. but look at a ferrari enzo, beautiful from the factory there is no need to mod it and ruin its already great looks, compare the enzo to a properly taken picture that is technically beautiful as well as a great subject matter with no need for photoshop.

currently i am finishing my bachelor of fine arts in university, and will be majoring in either drawing or photography, now i have to decide whether or not i want to continue school and become an professor and will most likely teach art history, drawing or photography, or i can leave with my bachelors and most likely become an art historian making art on the side as well.
