because ive been having trouble with my vvt for a while and its been becoming a hassle, I would then potentially be able to run cams, and also i heard tuning for the vvt hasnt been solidified.

like in my dyno graph i have a dip in power where, i believe, the vvt engages. dont know if its the tune or because its messed up. all 3 of those reasons are enough to make me ponder the idea, the aftermarket cam theory got me on toes a little more than the other 2 though haha

Well I can understand that. Being able to cam an engine is always a plus. I've seen where people have swapped heads to something like LSJ heads before. That said, it's gonna be a lot of work. Your ECM and PCM are gonna have to be worked to no longer expect to see the VVT. Mechanically I don't know how well they will mate up. There's always the possibility of having to deck the head and block mating surfaces then shim it to the correct clearances. If bolt holes don't line up you're gonna have issues there. I don't know if our VVT motors are anything like Hondas Vtec but if it is there would be a controlling solenoid that would need to be removed.

Like I said, anything is possible with the right time and money it just seems like it has potential for being more of a nightmare then what it's worth.

im tuned by Performance Autowerks, so whatever they use. im eventually going to switch over to hp tuners.

i think the first step would to figure mechanically if it would work. bolt holes, coolant, oil, etc. any ideas how to go about this?

Do an extensive search on google about ecotec head swaps. I've seen threads on other forums about it but don't remember which ones. See what they've used and done to get around any issues. The look for pictures to compare your head to others that you are looking to switch to. But pictures are only gonna get you so far. Eventually you would just have to find a head to get your hands on and actually physically see of it would work.

alright, thanks guys. hopefully it wont be too painful of a swap haha

edit: off the bat, im thinking a l61 head from a gen II would be the best bet, just because of the same gen II blocks

I'm thinking it would work but you still wouldn't be able to get cams unless you tune out all your VVT stuff and the cam sensors.I am still unsure how the car will act without the cam sensors.

yea thats most likely what i would do if i went ahead and did the swap. i would most definitely talk to a tuner about all of that though

No you need to have the end of the intake cam machined down and the cam position sensor press fit on. It's extra money but any machine shop that will handle auto parts should be able to do it.

okay, well my dad owns a machine shop and i work there so machining may not be a problem, just need to know how to machine it and how to hold and all that stuff. but they can be used if the machining is done?

Yeah. The gen I cams are a bit longer then the cams for the gen IIs iirc. So I think it has to be trimmed down a little then possibly milled down on that end for the CPS to fit on. But the sensor has to be press fit on the end. They do work you would just have to measure them side by side to see what exactly had to be done to make the sensor ring fit.

The Reluctor wheel fot the cam sensor HAS to be perfect, and I mean extremely perfect to the .00000000000000000001 of a millimeter or you will have issues so make sure you know how it mounts and lines up,otherwise toss your idea in the garbage. You can machine the intake cam down and run no CPS and tune out the CPS and VVT codes and be the test dummy for it but who wants to do that? lol.Are you not able to run LE5 or LNF cams since they are both gen II and are vvt?

yea being the test dummy is never fun or very cheap lol. im sure machining the cam wont be hard. if we cant do it im sure my dad knows someone that can.

as for the Le5 cams and LNF cams i thought i couldnt use these but a lot of people keep questioning me. ill find out and let you know for sure

edit:
this was the most insightful thread i got.
looks like the heads between the 2.2 and 2.4 are the same, someone tried the cams and fucked their car up and now i dont think anyone has done it since... yikes

I forget what shop was doing the cam sensor swap for people. I know its around here somewhere on the forums.

Oh and if you are looking for a head i have one that needs to be reworked but it would be a perfect core for you.
