You purchased a nice camera and some of those pictures look like you're off to a nice start. It's also great that you purchased a tripod as that can make a big difference in your picture quality, especially on the longer exposure/evening/dark shots. The automatic modes are pretty decent on the compact Canons but once you start feeling comfortable with the camera the S5 IS also has some fairly powerful manual controls. Start learning about shutter speed, aperture, sensitivity, and how they interact and affect your photographs, take your time, experiment, and soon you'll be even more impressed with what you can get out of the camera. The person behind the camera and their skills is usually more important that what they're shooting with.
