06 SS SC engine swap questions
hey everyone new to site and am in need of some help my son bought his very first car and made it 6 kms up the road and engine blew I'm not very happy and he is very upset anyway I have a used engine coming
I don't have a lot of room so the engine needs to come out from the top has anyone done the swap from the top?? does the tranny come(5 speed) with it or stay in the car??
any helpful hits. I got almost everything unhooked but some of wiring harness. I did remove the crank bolt doesn't look like a lot of room with the SC on there. does that have to come off or stay on
if anyone could help us that would be great thanks so much

Wow that's sucks. I've found the easiest way to do it is take off the sub frame with engine and trans on it with axles and all down the bottom of the car. Done this several times and works like a charm good luck replacing that engine
You might want to have someone with hptuners check out the tune the car is running. Also I would suggest you install an aero force interceptor and monitor knock while driving aggressively.
Haven't tried to remove it from the top, as it is the trans sticks way under the body and will not clear, if you removed the manifolds and all accessories, you could maybe tilt the engine enough to slide it out, I did it once on a Saturn Vue but they have a much bigger engine bay.
All my cobalt removals were done by lowering the subframe and dropping the engine/trans on the floor. If you do that, it comes out with the manifolds and everything on and makes it pretty easily actually. If you can't get the car very high, if you remove the pass side front strut there's a notch in the frame that the valve cover fits right though, I've jacked the body up high and lowered the engine/trans onto a small cart and rolled it out the side. Not difficult at all even without a lift.

thanks for the reply I don't have enough room to come out bottom I have it in a small garage and only about 1.5 ft on both sides of car so cant pull from the sides plus I have half the car apart and it all jacked up people say it can come out top but trying to chat to someone that has done it
On the vue, I took the engine and trans out the top but I had the engine stripped down to just a block.
You could pull the trans from the bottom and the engine would come straight up, but if you're gonna take the subframe and trans out the bottom, you could still pull the engine out the bottom.
I used to put a thick board under the center tunnel, and jack the car up there with a floor jack. You can get about 3 feet under the front bumper that way, and I imagine the engine would slide straight out the front once it's high enough.

If you take everything out the top, yes the trans will still be attached. You will have to remove the blower, intake and exhaust manifold, and possibly other things. You will have to tilt the engine way up, trans end way down, to clear the frame and lift it up. May still be necessary to lower the subframe to get enough tilt clearance, there's not a lot of room in the car, especially with the larger F35.
I did the pull from the top in a Vue, which has an optional V6, and it was the smaller F23 manual trans. I had to remove the starter, and something from the firewall, I don't really recall what. But it was a LOT of stuff to get clearance to slide it out.

I have pulled the engine of the top on a crashed ss because the previous owner sweared that's the way to do it. I knew that was not the case and I had to rip it off the tranny worst idea ever. Broke the inlet to the thermostat housing it was such a pain and that's because all accessories were removed including exhaust manifold. Don't do it! I can't even imagine how hard it is to mate the engine and trans in there
