Axle install and ring 24205145

Hi I'm re installing my axles and I'm wondering do I need this ring 24205145 and if so, does this go on the end that fits into the gearbox?

Thanks!

Thanks yes it was uninstalled and removed from the gear box. Then I purchased the part from for GM ring 24205145. So does it go about 4" up from the end of the axle piece that goes into the gearbox? Does it prevent grunge from getting into the system?

that part number is #2 its the retaining clip, its what actually holds the axle in the transmission.

Excellent thank you Sharkey - mine is the manual 5 speed - I can now get to work installing the axle, brakes and so on. I'm still not exactly 100% confident but I'll take the parts and eyeball the rig and see what works or makes sense - I'm expecting and hoping for a place on the axle that is meant to hold the ring.

The end that goes into the trans will have a grove cut out for the snap ring to clip into.

Thanks I'll replace the one that is there with the new ring now. The gap on the new ring is about a quarter of an inch, but the old one has a gap of 3 eighths or more, and is less perfect than the new one.
