I think its the yellow paint.Ive got 15 chips on the hood and even one on the roof.
Im thinking bug deflector for next winter if the dealer doesnt do anything about the paint.
I read some where on here a while ago that someone did get there hood repainted.
The paint is to hard and cannot take the smallest impact with out chipping.(not adhereing to the primer or base coat.

You think all thats bad... There is overspray on my hood from when they refinished my passenger fender. Theres all these whitish spots all over that side of the hood... and they didnt even take care of those chips on the hood when it was there!

Yeah I got quite a few as well. Theres always construction zones where ever you look and plus its a desert. I do think this car chips more than my 01' Blazer though.

My black cobalt seems to scratch if you just look at it , the clear on these cars must be close to non-existant . I stored mine for the winter and it still looks like **** at the bottom of the doors and behind the wheels . The paint there seems smooth but it looks like a ton of tiny pebbles hit (sandblast)and they are white . My car was parked when the sand was on the roads . ERRR

Mine had swirls all in the paint from railroad dust. Then first time I went to rinse the dust off of it the high pressure washer blew a piece of paint about the size of a quarter off the roof of mine. I had them repaint the top and completely compound and redo the rest of the paint. The dealership made good on all of it . Happened with less than a thousand miles on her.

Would it be possible to maybe have extra clear coats put on?? To help protect the paint??

You have no idea what you are talking about. Every car gets paint chips. The severity of which depends on where you drive. This is absolute lunacy that some of you think a manufacturer should warranty against paint chips. It does not matter if you bought a $10000 Aveo or a $70000 Corvette ZO6. They will both get chips no matter what you do. It will even happen on any Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and any other manufacturer in the world. I manage a collision center and see it all. Every car ever produced regardelss of whether Dupont, PPG, Sikkens, or Spies Hekker paint was used gets chips, scratches, and swirls. There is no such thing as a paint that does not swirl, scratch, or chip. Something else to keep in mind is that the lower your car sits, the more chips you will receive.

You are wrong. The paint used on most vehicles today is what is known as a basecoat/clear coat formula. The basecoat is your color. When your color is applied it is flat. It has no gloss whatsoever. Unless your car is a pearl white like on Cadillac's, any metal flake or pearl is in the basecoat. Then your clear goes over that to give it it's gloss. So it is not a 4 step process, just 2.

I am interested to find out by you how you know if a car has clear coat on it or not. I am just curious to see what some of the responses will be.

It is a bad idea to have any more than 3 solid coats of clear on a daily driver. If you make the clear coat too thick, then instead of it chipping it will start chunking. You will have large chunks of material coming off. That is much worse.

You can tell that you have clear one way is when you wash and wax your car color will come off onto the cloth if there is no clear coat, and most cars produced after '95 have clear on them...check for paint codes that start BC/CC or BCCC (base coat, clear coat)

That is kind of correct. If you wax your car and color comes off, then it is what is known as a "single stage" paint job. It never had clear to begin with. You are right about the 95+ thing though. Basically on a base coat clear coat paint job, if it does not have clear, it is not glossy. Pretty simple.

I have rock chips all over the hood. It really ticks me off. But I doubt any dealerships around here would do anything about it.

It must go to a dealer, but does not have to go to the dealer you bought it from.

I have the same orange-ish dots on my trunk (and only the trunk). Same exact problem you are talking about.

I regularly wash and wax my car as well...... I'm thinking that this is probably a warranty issue. Chips are going to happen regardless of the paint. So i doubt that is warranty.

The front of my hood has about 20 rockchips, like it was sandblasted.
She'll be two months old tomorrow!

Not trying to be a smart ass, really. How pissed can you be about the paint quality? Theese are just 10,000 dollar cars with a blower bolted on lol. I live in the woods, really, and have not had one problem with my paint 14K later. I did however put a small scatch in my bumper with my bicycle.

The paint used on the $10,000 base model Cobalt is the exact same stuff that GM uses on every other car. Even the Corvette or Cadillac CTS-V. They all get the same materials applied.
