Give us the cars history.
Like the other im not an expert but my previous car (1989 Plymouth acclaim) had a grinding noise whenever breaking because the front calipers wouls seize up. Hopefully someone else will help you out more.
You need front brake pads... badly... and probably rotors now too.
That grinding sound is metal-on-metal contact. It can make your calipurs sieze up from excessive heat... keep driving it like that and you are gonna get in a wreck soon b/c you will be unable to stop.
Just hope a little kid dosen't run out infront of you...

The grinding could also be a rock wedged in your BRAKE system... Just take a good look at your brakes and if you see anything that doesn't seem normal, remove it, spray it down, and you should be good to go. But if there isn't anything there, definitely take your brakes in for some work by a professional, assuming that you aren't one since you are asking about them on here.
You could also have a warped rotor, but that is going to be more of a squeel than a grind. There could be dust in your braking system, it could be all sorts of things. One method that I was always told about was to just haul ass down a road and brake hard a few times, if you still hear grinding, get your **** checked immediately, if you hear squeeling, then you need new pads, and if it goes away it was just dust...

It would be kind of odd for them to just start "grinding" and need new break pads. Normally they will have a "warning" by squealing for a good while before they start grinding. But yea, If you continue to dirve then your going to end up having to replace the rotors as well. But they can be machined back to regular if there isnt a lot of damage to them.
So go to a shop or dealer. Its not a good feeling when you push on the brake and nothing happens. If that happens just remember to use the gears as "brakes".
