Buyer Beware
Buyer Beware
Here's one for all you Chevy owners.
My 06 Cobalt SS has just had the warranty voided because it had a Mighty Oil filter on it and the motor siezed. The Mighy Oil Filter is made in the same factory as Gm uses for all its Asian export cars.
This all started when the timing chain began to deteriorate, which everyone knows, this has been a real weak link on the engine. First attempt to have tis checked out resulted in Nick Chevrolet telling me the car was not under warranty. Upon checking I found the extended 5 year 60K mile warranty to still be valid. If they had taken the car then, the timing chains could have been replaced and no further problems, but they refused to even look at the car unless I was paying for everything.
Nick Chevrolet in Taremtum , Pa took the car in and voided the warrantry when they saw a non GM oil filter installed. I cited the Magnuson-Mose Act to them and they stood thier ground and said they would not chnage their mind. Nick's also got the Zone Rep to go along on their decision and I knwo own a 2006 CobaltSS with 27,000 mile on it and its a junker. It now needs a short block assmbly for the price of $4500 parts and labor!
I have gone thru all the GM Customer Care phone calls and the last person I talked to, stated to me, the non Gm oil filter has voided the warranty! Again the MM act and she also just ignored that.
WHere to go from here:
Sue for Breach of Warranty
Better Budiness Bureau
Pay for something that should be covered.
Now that it is the computer I can't even take the car to a reliable Chevy Dealer for the warranty work. WHat to do?
SO owners beware, there are other dealers that can breach your warranty at a whim and this car is 100% factory stock..................

Maybe try sending an email to Mighty and see if they will step up and support you against the dealer. From what I saw online they don't sell to the general public. If you didn't buy it direct take your problem up with whatever oil chnage place did your oil change.
If need be with either of the above mention that if you are not satisfied with the result you will be taking it up with the media. Most local stations have somebody who likes to stand up for the avaerage joe because it make good localinterest stories.
they don't look like the best filter but I am sure they pass GM's minimum specs or they wouldnt be getting installed by the oil change places.

Thanks for the support.
I have e-mailed the local media, waiting for a reply.
I guess it's time for a lawyer. Nick Chevrolet and GM seem to totally ignore MM Act? They quoted on the phone $4400+ for replacment. This comes with a new 3 year/36k mile warranty, which is sort of ironic to me. LOL
Mighty has said they will support me. They sent the filter out to a testing lab and it was functioning properly and still flowing oil and have a written report on the independant testing lab, which they sent to me, also.
I think in a jury trial, Nick Chevrolet would lose. This topic has to hit near and dear to about car owner in the country...............I wish now I would have taken it to another dealer that is more reputable and trustworthy. This little podunk dealer doesn't really care about return business, I must assume.

If it was the Warranty then ya go get a lawyer, sue them they can't void it over using a non brand part that performs the same function.
If it was a service contract your probably screwed :/
If I am not mistaken the manufacturer cannot void a warranty for using aftermarket maintenance parts as long as they meet specifications. I'd read into it more before you go and pay for a new motor. Good luck with everything.
ya i have the 06 SSsc and my warranty went out @ 36K and its powertrain/engine i believe... soooo idk.. id def say CYA and put it in that dealers rectum!
i wanna see them ******* go down!
good luck buddy!
friend of mine in MN had his warranty void on his engine when the engine failed with a Fram oil filter. Hence why I use the ACDelco. What I didnt know is the timing chain deteriorating. Where is that a common knowledge thing?
where does one get a Mighty oil filter? I have never heard of them until I googled them today after reading this thread. is it a jiffy lube thing? and are you sure they are made by hengst? I would be skeptical of that.
