Thumbs down Car/engine Shutting Off!!! Wtf!!

OK hears the deal...This situation has happened twice to me already, once driving down to the beach and once last night driving to school. Both situations occurred after hitting a REALLY bad bump. I am on the highway driving at about 70-75 mph; I approach a section of the road where it is cut down (grinded) below surface grade (for construction purposes) I then continue into the construction zone driving on the unfinished surface and then SLAM onto the finished surface (transition between finished/ unfinished) and just like that due to the jarring effect of the bump my car shuts right off, like the ignition turned off. I immediately hit the four-ways and pull to the shoulder, come to a stop and started my car back up. My car hit so hard that it felt like a sure bent rim or blown tire but fortunately everything seemed and looked fine. The same thing happened when traveling to the beach when I hit a pot hole on the highway. This scared the **** out of me and has only added to more insecurities about this car!! This def. should not happen!! Is there any recalls about this issue?? I have the sportlines installed which def. does not help the susp. control, but this STILL should not happen under any circumstance regardless of the situation!! Any suggestions before I give it to the hands of handy GM tech that will prob. find nothing wrong with it??

I'd take the car in, there have been a few people who have had shorts in the headlight wiring that has caused intermittent stalls and such, but more importantly, my guess is you might have done some damage underneath the car and should get it checked out.

The stalling definitely sounds like a short somewhere. Get that suspension checked out though. You could have bent any number of things.

After I put my system in, my car would run just fine until I turned it off. Occasionally, all electrical power would cut off and I couldn't start it. I had to wait for a while, then crank it. Scared to take it in because they could blame it on the system and then void my warranty, I had a friend of mine check it out. When I opened the trunk and moved my box to access the battery when it happened again, my power was restored. Come to find out, my box was sitting on the battery cables, causing them to temporarily short. I moved my box, and my car has been doing just fine. But that's probably not your situation.

Tonight I was driving to school on the same route and came to the same section on the turnpike with the uneven surface, this time I REALLY slowed down and stayed in the right lane. As I approached the same spot I hit the bump again at about 50-55 mph and THE SAME THING HAPPENED!! I hit the hazzards but this time I started the car back up while coasting, through it into 5th and continued cruising.....I truly can't believe this!! This is such a dangerous problem. I actually believe that with the sportlines installed our stock struts and shocks should not be utilized with lowering springs. Everyone with this set-up knows what type response you get when hitting a good sized pot-hole or even driving over rough surfaces. Some people have even upgraded to a better tire which has helped this problem considerably. I believe the impact of the road caused the actually key ignition to pop into the off position. This occurrence has only happened when hitting a hard bump. Thank God my car started back up right away or I could have caused one massive accident considering there was no shoulder!! Riders with this same set-up BEWARE.....

I read another thread about a similar problem. Do you have many keys and accessories attached to your key fob? Apparently some of the ignition "tumblers" are weak and a heavy load on the key is enough to switch the vehicle off.
God luck!

Thanks for the post; that would seem very likely considering I do have some heavy key fobs. I did take notice on how easy the ignition does turn off, this is more than likely the problem. I already checked all connections so it is not my battery. Thanks again for the post.

Mine does it too on bad bumps. question do you have anything else on the car key keychain cause any decent amount of weight on it when you hit a bump will turn the key enough to shut the car off.

I would never be going that fast over those kinds of bumps... I do maybe 30 KILOMETERS not miles and hour lol.. that's like what 15mph on bumps like that.... bad, VERY bad on suspension parts, rims, and tires! I had the same issue with the lanyard though lol... I kept turning my car off lol! My situation was a little different though, When I put my keys in the ignition, my lanyard would sometimes get stuck around my gear shifter and I wouldn't notice so when I through it into 2nd or 4th, it would turn my car off lol!

going to sound a little funny but check your alternator connection...it might be loose. but if its your alternator your car wouldnt kill right away. but then again...the fact of the matter is your car needs service and its still underwarrenty hopefully so bite the bulit and take it to the dealer

All I have is my one car key with a keychain because I can't stand the sound of the keys jingling while I drive. And as for the lanyard idea??? I just looped it over the key itself to keep it out the way when I used it.

I had the same problem except i was in second gear it was about 55-60º out and i felt like flooring it. i was going straight no bumps and at the end of 2nd gear around 5-6k it just SHut off lost my tach signal no rpm's i put it in neutral and tried revving it cuz maybe i hydrolocked but it wouldnt work. i pulled over. tried starting it it was bout to start but felt like it was hydrolocked. like it ALMOST started but stalled RIGHT as it turned on. mind u i just hopping in my car after letting it sit for over 3 hours condensation was on the roof and spoiler and such kinda muggy out. but i just jumped in and drove at least a 1/4 mile b4 wanting to floor it in 2nd gear. i freaked out i didnt know what the hell it was. and i didnt drive through a puddle or anything. SOMEONE have an ideas?

the only thing i could possibly think that it MIGHT be from the conditions i was in was that. the car was cold oil cold fuel cold a little condensated and maybe water shot thru the injector? or car cold oil cold and maybe condensation on my Intake? maybe cold oil cold car not enuff oil pumping properly and caused a knock and car shut off to save itself?
cuz i eventually got it started on the 3rd try and it drove fine afterwards. i even pushed it hard to make sure it wouldnt do it again. and nothing. worked fine. a little steam when i got it working again but i duno.
