Check Engine Light On
Check Engine Light On
Ok i just bought a 06 cobalt SS/Sc brand new off the lot just recently passed the 3k mark and my check engine light came on so i pulled out the ol user manual it says that since the lights on steady its the emissons system acting up. and it could be 1. if i hit a puddle of water the electrical system cold cause it. this isnt it or 2. gas lid isnt on tight enuff this isnt it either or 3. if i have changed the tires recently to a different size and this isnt it either. while i was inspecting my car the engine or the supercharger is making more noise now that it ever has since i bought it. sounds as iff its coming fromthe front of the engine so could the supercharger cause the emisson light to come on? could it be the bearings gone out and the screws are hitting? a little feedback is welcome.... ive checked and read all i know and still puzzled its going to the gm place tommorow...
my CEL went on this morning which sucks, Hack told me to run it for 3 cycles then it should go away and its prolly the intake, well lets see ive had he intake in -20,-10,0,10,20,30,40,50,60+ temps and its hasnt gone on till just now, my newest upgrade to my car was the B&M so im thinking mabe that had sometihing to do with it but i dunno, now here my problem with going to the dealer, my Vallet remote start alarm system the dealership already dosent like bc it throws a code for my power steering, now if they look and see the B&M, Injen, and XTC Downpipe im gonna be lookin at a voided warranty unless i take all that out before it goes into the dealer, whats this code scanner device that you guys are talking about and can i purchase it in the Syracuse area??
There is no such thing as a code for overrevving the engine. They're feeding you a line of ****. Thing is they probably cleared the code too so you'll never know what it was. If you broke something as a result of overrevving, fine, but you'd still need to know what it was you broke. If the light is still on, take it to AutoZone or someplace like that and they can scan codes for you as well.

spending a lot of time there is a definate sign of abuse......
I almost (ALMOST) want to agree with the over revving, my CEL came on after some VERY spirited driving in 1st and 2nd for about 5 minutes, and my car still stinks of rubber. It went away later that day after some normal driving and the car was on and off a couple other times.
A check engine light shouldn't come on unless there's a PROBLEM, not just possible abuse. If I went to a dealer and they said "Yeah, your CEL came on because you overreved your motor." I'd laugh at them and tell them to give me the EXACT code that came up.
I'm not saying that overreving the motor is totally unrelated to throwing the CEL, I'm just saying that the dealership is leaving out some important info...i.e. what the problem actually was with the car. If I were a customer, I'd want that information to be absolutely CERTAIN that what they're saying is correct. I would definitely not put it past a dealership to use some lame excuse like that to avoid a warranty repair. I know similar things have happened to me, suddenly the horrid rear brake noise that was audible not only outside of the car, but from over 3 blocks away from the time the car had 20k on it was suddenly "unable to be replicated" until 2000 miles after my warranty...then they could magically hear it and tell me I had a faulty caliper on the right rear, which of course, they tried to make me pay for...
I agree. but your computer wont only register AT REDLINE.
Your computer likely has an RPM window from 5800 to 6500 (i say that because the tech specifically quoted that number...), where if you spend X amount of time there within an X minute period....it will log it and throw a cel.
lets be honest here. if you ARE spending alot of time over 5800rpm for extended periods of time....its not good for your engine, and you shouldnt be to surprised if GM doesnt like that when it comes time to do warranty work.
