Cobalt SS/TC...Service ESC
Driving the other day, tached up to around 5500 or so, NLSed from 1st to 2nd gear, and when I did the DIC read Service ESC. Called OnStar for a probe, came back with a code on the ESC. OnStar said take it to dealer within 7 days. After I drove a bit, I intentionally tried to set off the ESC, and I did, DIC read ESC Active. Called OnStar back an hour later, no code being reported. Decided to take it to the dealer anyways, and they found a loose wire connection, and stated the NLSing can sometimes cause this wire connection to become undone. And they stated that sometimes, ecspecially if your turning and doing the NLS you can actually heat up the steering box, which can throw a code as well. Just a little FYI.
By the way, GM dealer in Hillsborough, NC has the best Service Tech Customer Service I have encountered.

and it's not so hellish anymore. It's been raining all day and the temp is 37 degrees. I washed my car on saturday!!!!
"Esc active" comes on when im driving in the snow and i start to lose traction and potentially could go into a spin. i think its some sort of thing that keeps me on the road and out of ditches...?
I know this is coming back from the dead but I wanted to post my solution. My car was doing this nearly since I drove it off the lot. I was waiting for it to get worse so they had a better chance to diagnose. Well that wasn't necessary.
After several thousand miles it was no better and no worse. When weather got cold the car needed a jump start several times as well.
Finally, "Service Air Bag" would show up on the DIC as well. So I took it in and demanded they just have a look, scan for codes, etc. etc. Of course with the air bag thing there wasn't much demanding to be done. That's a pretty big deal.
If I get even more details than I have I can let you know. This is what I was told
The battery was just a bad one from the factory and it wouldn't hold a charge well. So a new one was installed.
The front crash sensor and the passenger seat occupancy sensor are both bad. Parts are coming in today and should be done today.
The ESC required no hardware. It's a firmware upgrade and/or programming issue in the module. He wasn't absolutely sure on that as he was reading the techs notes. But either way, it's just a glitch more or less that can be fixed with an update.
I'm just happy they actually FOUND things that something can be done about. The ESC was random and the air bag was mostly on cold starts.
