Exclamation Door handle lock missing...

Good Afternoon Everyone,

So Saturday evening my friend calls me up and says that her passenger doors handle lock (the silver part that you would put your key in to open the door) is gone. Of course after asking “Gone? What do you mean Gone?”, and getting a description, I drive over and see that indeed it is missing. There is just a black hole in her passenger door handle. She has a 2009 LT btw.

I tried to feel inside the hole, nothing there. I took off the inner panel to try and see if I could get to it but its in the (I guess) "hollow" part of the door and I didn’t want to remove the plastic that is on the side of the door in case when she takes it in to the dealer they accuse me of tampering with it.

Was looking around online for answers and I figured either someone tried to jack her car, or it just fell off inside the door. She said she never did anything to it and I believe her since I make fun of her saying turning the key is too much work for her and always using the remote lock and unlock.

So the questions are:

1. Has this happened to anyone here?
2. Do you think it just fell out (in) or was someone tampering?
3. Will it be covered under warranty if someone was tampering?

Again, because I couldn’t look at the actual lock to see if it was scratched, bent, etc, I am only assuming it was tampered with or was loose somehow and fell.

Thank you in advance for you input,

someone probably tried to knock it in to break in......happens all the time on the newer trucks. I do a few of em quite often at the dealership here, and if that's the case it's not warranty.

Crap. Yea, that is what I’m thinking. Is this something expensive to replace? Can it just be "fixed" back into place? (Assuming there is no damage to the keyhole or locking mechanism itself).

You should be able to fix it yourself with parts to replace the damaged clips or rods. It shouldn't be too expensive if there was no body damage.

sounds like someone at the GM plant decided to give you a sedan rear passenger door handle.

i would definately take that **** in to the dealer and ask them wtf is up. lol

on every cobalt there should be a lock mechanism on the front two doors.
