extremely annoying whine
extremely annoying whine
I have an 05 ss s/c with stock intake system and k&n drop in. over the last 10000 miles, i have been getting a progressively worse, shrill, piercing whine from the car while idling, mostly on startup. it actually hurts to be near the car when its doing it. i've checked all of the joints on the intake to ensure they were tight and i wasn't hearing an air leak, but they're all as tight as they can go. with the hood open, its hard to pinpoint the exact sound, but it almost sounds as if its coming from the supercharger itself. behind the high pitched sound is a grumbly, loose sound. for the most part, the noise goes away a minute or two after startup (assuming i have put it in gear and driven, or given it a decent amount of throttle), but does it on start up with both a cold and warm engine. any ideas?
In order to isolate the source, use your shop vac hose and hold one end to your ear, the other end put on various locations throughout the engine bay. When you hold the hose against the supercharger and you can hear that loud ass whine, you have found your source. Good Luck.
hasn't made the noise since i changed the oil over the weekend. makes me think that either a, b, or c happened.
a) it might have been a hose that was caught enough to pull a vacuum to make the noise, and i knocked it back to where it should have been in the process of trying to get to the oil filter
b) it just went away so that it can come back louder later and really **** me off
c) i know this is out there, but the oil filter i had previously was a p.o.s.. it was a delco, but didn't have the hengst markings on it and the pleats weren't evenly spaced around it. can't see how that would really cause a noise, but it went away as soon as the filter was replaced.
