Help with the recall?

A the title implies I am looking for some help with the ignition switch recall. My car is in the list, they have no parts, the vehicle experiences a short loss of power along with the engine losing power, using just the key is "safe", and basically following it the best I can.

I cannot find one question, searched google and it's a bit too specific. Does the steering lock? I know you lose power steering, but does the loss of power lock the steering or is the wheel still free? It's a deciding factor really.

Maybe someone on here knows.

The steering wheels locks up when the key turns to the acc position. So in essence, when the vehicle shuts off, your steering wheel will lock up. You also lose function of the brakes, unless you pump them up and really floor the pedal since the brake booster isn't getting vacuum. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, I will try and answer them the best I can.

When my car is off the steering wheel does not lock. I'm still able to turn the wheels and steer the car.

Mine 2005/SC has been in the shop 4 time due to this problem in the last 3 years, my car dies when I hit random bumps in the road and here in Iowa we have several.

I am able to steer the car and I have always had brakes but there more like non power assist.
I can usually hit the clutch & restart it in seconds & just go on my way.

My concern with the whole thing is If I get hit or ran off the road the airbags won't deploy so that is my worst fear as some of the big trucks just want to push you around!

I have to drive it atleast till the weather gets warm enough to get this cycle out

See this is where it gets mixed....

Some people say the steering locks and some say it doesn't. It's such a big game changer if it does. I used to own a 83' RX7. No power steering. I can handle the no power steering and no abs. But you throw in the steering lock...

I'm in the fence with the "just the key is safe too" line. Who actually goes anywhere and just takes just the car key? Or keeps it separate? Why would you design it that weak to start with? Oh well I hope it's soon. It's finally like spring where I live. Been a long wait to drive the Balt.

I do. Its not a design flaw. Notice how most of these people that have been shown on the news were young girls? (Not being sexist, I swear) They probably had tons of **** on their key ring and were steering with their knees...

When I experienced it my power steering just went away, I could break but had to really push it in. Happened in the dark so ALL my lights went off. Was pretty scary, luckily it was in a neighborhood so no one was around to hit me. No I did not have a bajillion things on my keychain.
