Horrible shifter rattle
Horrible shifter rattle
Over the past two months I've noticed my shifter rattles horrible when it snows out. At first i thought it was just normal drivetrain backlash, but the only time its rattled is when its snowing. Both times it sounded like the transmission was going to come apart. It rattles when its in neutral or when driving, etc. When i come to a complete stop and wait about 10 seconds it stops.
anyone know what it could be? possible transmission mounts? I am at a loss here

When you say rattle, what direction is the shifter moving?(front, back, side-to-side)
Have you checked the bolts holding the shifter to the shifter base and the 4 nuts holding the shifter base to the chassis?

No, i planned on doing that this weekend. the only issue is this happens when it snows...never happens just during normal driving
Recently create a related thread? How'd that end up anyway?

GM said they couldn't hear it. Guy took it out and drove it and he said besides my steering column being broken he couldn't hear any transmission issues to speak of.
Bump. car doing this without snow or cold. If I take a turn hard the shifter rattles or when I hit bumps I can feel it. Also, when I downshifted to 4th it rattled crazy and I heard a growling noise.
You need to do a visual inspection of the shifter cables starting from directly under the shifter (the boot cover is just clipped in and pops off) all the way to where the cables connect to the transmission right under the fuse box. I recommend either jacking the car up to do this or removing the fuse box to look topside.
There are “U” clips right on the transmission that are important to check as well. They hold the shifter cables in place that then go through the firewall to the interior. Only basic tools are needed and you’ll be able to tell if something isn’t right. Worse case, you can always post pictures here and someone will tell you if it looks right.

My shifter used to rattle when driving but no other time. Took it in to get checked and ended up with a "new" tranny. 4th was all facked up. Sounds different from yours but thought I'd share my experience.
