Intermittent/Inconsistent Starting Problem
Intermittent/Inconsistent Starting Problem
Just got an '07 SS for a gas saver (Better than a Sierra 1500 anyway!) and I have an issue which of course the dealership can't replicate, but has happened to me at least 6 times in the 2+ weeks I haven driven it.
Basically, it starts up just fine cold, but drive it for a while then shut it down for about 5 minutes and it refuses to fire. Will turn over, but will not fire. Let it sit for another 5 - 10 minutes and it starts up just fine. Sometimes, it will be just fine regardless.
No codes (No CEL anyway), no nothing...Dealership refuses to do anything until they can replicate it. Has an Injen CAI and I think no AIR pump because the fuses are pulled for it. Since I am not too familiar with this particular motor, I cannot say for sure if the AIR pump is gone or not.
Right now it is an annoyance when running errands, but the first time I get stranded, I am going to be
I was guessing the fuel pump, but I would expect it to get more and more consistent.
Thanks for the help!

Update: Changed Fuel Pump Relay -> No luck. Turned to Accessory and could hear the pump prime, but it still is hit or miss. Any thoughts?
Leaves me with: Fuel Filter, Fuel Injectors, plugs and wires. Missing anything else?

Try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. My Silverado did something like this, and I replaced a few parts due to age. Once I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, it all disappeared. This should only be a neoprene diaphram portion that is bad.
How many miles do you have on the car? A new fuel filter and plugs might not be a bad idea too.

Has 63K on it. I just got it and it started all this once I got it home (Of course). I put new headlight bulbs in it earlier this afternoon and I am not sure if the person before me had a set HIDs or not and spliced the wires, but I noticed that when I hit bumps on the road afterwards that the my lights would go dim. Hit the bezel a litttle bit and they would come back up to normal...almost like it was going to the Daytime Running Lamps. One messed up piece of equipment that is for sure!
Fuel filter is a definite for tomorrow. Will post updates afterwards.

thats weird dude. sounds like you got a car someone took crappy care of. i hop you can fix it. but it literally just dies? when stopped or while your driving? sounds like some sortof fuel problem.
Also make sure the O2 sensors are connected.
As for the headlights, they are not needed at all
If the HIDS were put in correctly, they should not have spliced the harness. It sounds like they had angle eyes or halos on at one point. Some form of LEDs is possible too.
That does suck though.

Other weird thing happened today on my way to work: For a split second the radio cut out. Makes me think something bad electrically, but most everything else I think should be done anyway (for personal satisfaction). Guess I should check all the grounds too.
Anyone know a post on here that lists all the ground locations?
No, it will not start after you turn it off. If it starts, it runs perfectly fine and it always starts when it is cold.

When it doesn't start, the engine turns over, but doesn't fire. I will try off and on and the same thing. The last 2 times this has happened though, it eventually tried to fire, sputtered for a couple seconds and died. This was after trying to start it up periodically for 5 minutes. Only code it threw at that point was for the knock sensor. I let it sit for a couple more minutes and then it starts up like nothing was ever wrong. It is maddening to say the least.
On a side note, I checked the lights and wires. Have loose wires at the sockets. I think that will be an easy fix relative to the starting issues.
Just FYI you have coil packs, no spark plug wires. Change plugs and put a new fuel filter in first as those are the cheapest to fix, plus if you don't know how long it's been between maintenance, it's not a bad thing to check anyway. Coil packs run about $100 each and there's one for each plug, so that can get pricey pretty fast.
Where in Ohio are you?

After all that, it ended up being the Crank Position Sensor. Finally threw a code for it. Been running like a champ for 3 weeks now. I know there were some who were curious as to what it was.
