The only way I can get the key out is when i push this plastic white thingy in the steering wheel housing. I think it might have something to do with me trying to hook up an alarm system so I might have tapped into the wrong wire or something. I notice when i send a 12 volt pulse to the brown wire in the housing it lets me take the key out but I don't know if it is safe. Someone please help me

coke spilled in the shifter will stick the key lock release. I know this because i have replaced about 5 shifters for this problem.

so...

check your floor shifter for sticky substance.

Turns out it was a 2A ignition fuse that blew. After fuse was replaced it let me take the key out. Thanks chevytech329 for your reply
