loud ticking noise

I had my motor out and taken apart, diamond pistons, new rings. Anyways I go to start it and there's this loud ticking. It sounds like its by number 4. I took off the valve cover and everything looks fine. Any help would be great, thanks!

Hard to diagnose without actually hearing it, but I've heard the timing chain tensioner can weaken and cause a very loud ticking / tapping sound under the hood. Could also be piston slap from the forged replacements? Does it go away when the car is warmed up?

I would hope its not piston slap haha. I haven't let it warm up yet but if I hold the rpms at like 12 1500 I can't hear it anymore

mine does this to when my car is started in the morning before its at regular temp. i am hoping its not a loose valve or anything but it does it every now and then so its starting to make me worry. I have had my kit by 0tt on for a year, i dont beat my car and i dont race much since im always working. i had a valve gasket replaced under warrenty in aug, and i didnt notice this sound till after i got my last oil change. Only thing different was that the oil change was with castrol 5-30 synthetic and not the mobile one because wally world was out and it was the middle of winter and im at 50 percent oil life now.

I just got my car back from the mechanic not too long ago after it was making a noise like that.
come to find out the timing chain tensioner had failed and allowed the timing chain to be slack.
might check that out.

did it still make the sound even when the car was warm for you? I also get a big jerk to the engine as I give it a good amount of gas

might have it checked out anyways. if your tensioner fails, your chain could slack and possibly jump time resulting in any number of bad things.

Mine decided to fail one night as i started my car. Hit the key, heard a sound similar to a weak starter, and the car started right up. no cel's, no jerking, nothing aside from a light ticking at idle. starting trying to baby it home, and called my mechanic. Drove fine, the ticking would go away under load but at idle it would get louder. He came over the next morning and listened to it and decided maybe we had something slip under the valve cover. after checking it out, we didnt see anything nasty so the timing chain was our next bet.
put it on a flat bed and hauled it to the shop and started tearing into her. come to find out my tensioner blew apart and my timing chain jumped when i started my car. We got extremely lucky since the car jumped EXACTLY 180 of timing. any less and i might have been looking at replacing valves and what not.
