O-ring kit I purchased
Ok,
First I’ll introduce myself, then I’ll go into the issue and fixes.
I’m new to the forum, just bought an 06 SS/SC. I’m not new to cars in general but I’m primarily a Honda guy, but got a killer deal in the car so now I own a cobalt.
Onto the issue I bought the car with a check engine light the dreaded P0017 code.
So I ordered a new cam sensor and went to work.
I ended pulling the cps housing and and found this: This was the CPS housing as removed apperantly the needed the entire tube of rtv...So I proceeded to clean it up and try to locate a new seal but GM discontinued it so I improvised I went to the part store and got an o-ring kit:

Also here is the finished cps housing seal I ended up cutting the o-ring and snaking it around and using rtv in the corners.
So I installed a new Cam Sensor, timed the housing and reinstalled, tightened a couple of loose bolts I found, changed plugs, oil, and air filter. I started the car it fired immediately, when the idle came back down it idled between 800-1000 rpm I let it idle like that for about 10 min or so let the water get to operating temperature. I shut the car off, I started it back up and the check engine light came back on same code P0017. I have changed a couple of suspect vacuum lines and will be testing the crank sensor to see if it’s good. If it tests good then I’ll pull the cover and verify the engine is in time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I tested crank and cam sensors and wiring all tested good.
Ended up swapping the exhaust cam and timing chain and it cleared the code. I bought the cam from gmpartsdirect.com for 155.
My assumption is that the pressed in key must have rotated slightly causing the code. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures.
