M-80 In A Pillow Noise

I occasionally hear a noise in the engine area that sounds like an M-80 0that is wrapped in a pillow going off. It happened only during downshift and only occasionally. Recently it occured while accelerating at half throttle in second gear between 4000 and 4500 rpms.

Has anyone had this occur and what was the cause?

If my service manager is reading this post, no comments from the peanut gallery please.

Is the car hesitating when that happens? it almost sounds like detonation.

It sounds a little like a sudden release of air or a backfire from the intake but there is no change in how it runs. The first time I heard it was when I accidentally went from 3rd to 1st instead of 2nd. (Ooops) The RPM's went up to 6,000 and there was a Boom under the hood. No affect on how it was running.

Is there a blow off that might do this?

My car is completely stock.

a boom under the hood.... that was your engine shooting itself, because going into first instead of 3rd is badddddd. i have no clue what that could be though.

UMM.... I"d bring it to the dealership.... you mighta did some valve train damage right there... watch your boost gauge ... if it goes up higher than normal.... not a good sign

May Have Found Cause

Engine movement yanking on shift cable ripped body bolt off last week. Bolt holds shift cables in place next to body... er... at least it did before it was ripped out of the body. Have not heard the noise since.
