Name that noise

My LSJ is making this noise randomly but it is getting more frequent. Also when it happens i get spike of Knock Retard. Thoughts as to what it is. I am thinking its either the supercharger coupler is wearing out, or maybe my lash adjusters. Can't quite say where the noise is coming from next time it happens i will use my mechanics stethoscope to narrow it down.

Thanks

It sounds like a diesel...

In the case of a diesel that would be normal and it's call compression explosion which comes early or late after a valve is open causing the valve rattle you are hearing...

But it's a video and sound from a camera phone can be different.

I can tell you that it is not the coupler as mine is going out and it sounds nothing like that. Plus the coupler stays it doesn't come and go.

Ok thanks. That helps to maybe rule it out. I think it is more towards the back of the motor maybe and bad exhaust leak at the header. Its just weird that it comes and goes.

That sounds god awful

Doesn't sound like tensioner or chain issue.

Honestly sounds like a valvetrain issue.

What happens when you rev it?

Can you get a stethoscope?

I do have a stethoscope in the car ready to go, it just hasn't happened again since this recording. When i rev it it goes away.

it was making the diesel sound again. So I whipped out my stethoscope and started poking around I believe it's coming from in the Timing chain area. When the motor was making the noise , there was a very similar sound in that area, when the noise went away after a while the noise in the timing area went away too. Thoughts? Timing chain tensioner?

that is what happens when plastic molding fails, causes weak points in the molded material.

Going to be having tons of fun replacing that chain guide. Be safe and replace the chain as well if it has any signs of wear.
