Noise up front tapping from bottom end?

Ok, so I know all about the supercharger click and that its normal, but when I start the car and I sit at idle I get a tapping sound.
If I open the hood and put my head to the valve cover I cant hear it, but I can hear it just fine when I put my head on the ground near the driver side door.

Any ideas, its going in for service wednesday, just trying to prepare myself for what they may say.

Look at the thread about the timing chain tensioner tsb.

Here it is: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...t=timing+chain

update!

Alright so I drop the car off this morning and mention the service bulletin and the guy in the service department takes me out for a short drive AFTER I told him that it only did it at idle.

Great Start.

Then he goes "I dont hear anything." I told them to hold onto it let everything cool down and try again later. I can see this process is going to be fantastic. idiots.

to top it off he is listening for what i told him was a faint noise in a busy parking lot next to a major road.
so far im unimpressed

He said it does it when it's cool at idle. The exhaust only ticks when it's hot and cooling down.

That's how mine started. It would only make the noise when the car sat for a while and the engine was cold. When I revved the engine, the noise would quit. Sometimes it would be very loud that ya can here it 20 feet away and others it would be so quite that ya couldn't here it all or ya had to lay under the car.

ok, so i got the typical "we couldnt replicate the problem" response from dealer 1. Moving on to a second dealer on monday. funny thing is when i picked it up, it did it in the parking lot, but went away by the time the fat bastard hobbled over to take a listen.

Service was rude, they never returned my calls, and after having the car for 2 days found nothing I wouldnt be surprised if they never even started it...

also they said they didnt know anything about this TSB, no record of it in their system, Fr33k, you got a TSB number handy?

well superrco06 just do what i did, i brought ym 07' in w/ 1200 miles complaining of the same problem and even hinted towards them what it could be(but didnt be a dick and diagnose the problem for them) and got the same answers, so i made sure to have a service report stating i brought it in for some kind of knock, and they coudl not duplicate at time, and car is normal. so when it breaks ****'M!

I had a similar problem. Look at your tensioner pulley while someone else is lightly revving the engine. That may be making the sound you are describing. The serpentine belt was stretched out/worn.

This is an actual copy of the TSB that was sent from GMTAC. Like I said on another post, dealers WILL NOT find this on GMDealerworld. It's not available to dealers online. It's only available through GMTAC. The tech has to call GM with a repair order number and VIN number and mention the problems. Then if they get someone that knows anything they will fax the below TSB to the tech.

Hope it helps.

The AIP number below is the only reference to the TSB.

AIP3252

MODELS:
206-2007 CHEVROLET COBALT, COBALT SS
2006-2007 CHEVROLET HHR
2006-2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU
2007 PONTIAC G5
2006-2007 PONTIAC G6
2006 PONTIAC PURSUIT(CANADA ONLY)
2006-2007 PONTIAC SOLSTICE
2006-2007 SATURN ION REDLINE
2007 SATURN SKY

BUILT BETWEEN 4/1/06 - 11/1/06
WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ENGINES
2.0 ENGINE (VIN P - RPO LSJ)
2.2 ENGINE (VIN D OR F - RPO L61)
2.4 ENGINE (VIN B OR P - RPO LE5)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

CONDITION/CONCERN:

On rare occasions, a tick or rattle noise may be heard from behind the front cover of the engine and/or pieces of a timing chain roller may be found during an oil change. This may be the result of a timing chain concern.

Non-heat treated timing chain rollers were randomly installed in the assembly line hoppers. He advised that this happened sometime between 4/1/06 - 11/1/06 so it can randomly affect late 2006 - early 2007 models.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:

If this concern is experienced, inspect the timing chain for missing or damaged timing chain rollers. If a missing or damaged timing chain roller is found, replace the timing chain and gears using the part numbers currently listed in the parts catalog.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

ticking or knocking? It seems that from what you described its the tensioner. Although it you worried about the motor next time you change the look thru it carefully. Gold color shavings (brass) = rod bearings. I've seen it more times I care to count.....ok twice hehe.

Anyway if you are worried about the motor send an oil sample to www.blackstone-labs.com ....they can tell you whats in it. And more importantly if there is something in it thats not supposed to be....ie high levels of brass.

I'm betting tensioner though...

If you look down right next to the supercharger pulley there is a tensioner pulley. It looks like a little shock absorber with a rubber boot on it. Have somone rev the engine while you are looking at that. It should wiggle around and make a slapping noise. I had the tensioner replaced twice and it didnt fix the problem. Then I took it to a SMART dealer and they replaced the serpentine belt and the problem went away. They said that the belt may have been stretched out or something.

Its a belt tensioner not chain.
