Service Airbag Light

Well on my way home this weekend the light came on.... ******* pisser. I called the dealership and they can get me in on thursday, I say "well is it unsafe to drive without it?" they say " No, it just means your airbag isnt working" so I obviously respond with "And you don't think that is unsafe??"

Well besides that... I looked under my passenger seat since i heard there are alot of problems with them and TSB. so underneath the seat i see the connectors and I see one connector not attached. It is just over the piece that looks like a shotgun barrel (you get what i mean especially if you have seen it. I could not find an opposite piece to the connector but does anyone know if there should be an open connector? It doesnt seem right. If one of you guys with an 06 could take a look and let me know I would appreciate it. Maybe its just the connector not plugged in.

Thanks in advance

wow, thanks reign. I guess there are supposed to be plugs unplugged. I guess I will check the fuses. Is it located in the interior center console or under the hood?

Thanks guys... i went to look at lunch and I have the wires that reign is showing plugged in. But under the seat there is that weird double barrel platic piece (literally looks like a shotgun) and there is a plug right there that is not plugged in. I don't see another side to it, but my brother was sitting in the backseat this weekend so with moving the passenger seat back and forth and someone being back there for the first time ever (yea over a year and never a back seat passenger) something might have been pulled or kicked.

Thanks alot guys. I might try and pull out the seat tonight if i get the chance to get a better look.

Your double barrel shotgun is your floor vents for the rear seats. I think the connector your refering to is for your heated seats. Most of the balts are hardwired for heated seats so your main body wiring harness is there but you wont have the element in your seat for it to plug into.

Is it an 8 wire connector?

Heated seats..... duh... why didn't I think of that. Thats exactly what it is. Ok so all my wires are plugged in fine then.. Maybe I need to check the fuse. Like I asked before, is it in the center console under the radio or in the engine bay.

Thanks alot guys.

The airbag fuse shows to be at the BCM on the passangers side of your console. It says it's fuse number 13 but it might be different on your car.

There's 2 different bulletins for SIR lights. I'll list both of them below. That might be what's wrong.

First one:

Second one:

Make sure the wires aren't cut because my airbag light came on and I took it to the dealer and they said the seat rails cut the wire because of it going back and forth... what a great place for those wires!

Ok guys just got back from the dealer. and here is the final story. I checked the connectors and wires underneath the seat. None were frayed or destroyed. I haveone connector not plugged in but that is for heated seats which I dont have. I checked the fuses... they are number 13 and 24... checked both driver and passenger just in case. both fuses were fine.

The problem was a connector under the rug. it is under the seat and under the rug and it runs along the rocker panel. He said he had no idea how it got unplegged but it did. I told him someone sat in the backseat for the first time ever and it was prob loose from the factory and got kicked. I was going to pull out my seat and check for this but I just got way too busy. So for any of you that have this happen... there is another connector underneath the carpet running along the rocker panel.

Same problem with my 06 GT right now. Replaced entire passenger presence system including seat cushion. cleared all DTC codes, and as soon as someone sat on the passenger seat, the light is back. Following all the 'SI' diagnostic directions, we have now ordered the passenger seatbelt assembly and wiring. however, something is shorting the PPS module and GM has NO idea what it is right now. We have now opened an engineering tach case and trying to get an engineer to the dealership. tell your dealer to have an electrical guy test that PPS module. - i bet yours has shorted out.
I'll keep you posted.

We replaced the entire passenger side seatbelt assembly today, and so far so good. Also, instead of clearing the DTC codes from that failed PPS module, we flashed it and operated it manually with the 'tech 2'. when we did this - the dtc for the failed module magically disappeared and it began to function again properly. every tech in my shop has a different opinon as to what caused the original fault, and all of those opinons contradict what the GM engineers have been telling me.
i drove the car home tonight, and i let my wife take the SRT to work tonight. I am going to drive the GT with a passenger for a good run, operate the seatbelt retractor, (with my crappy OEM brakes) and see if I can't make the code come back. If not, then I can say we have solved the problem.
my best advice to you ORNGBALT is to NOT drive it with an SIR code and get it back to the dealer ASAP. there is a possibility the air bags wont deploy in a crash, also, with a code and a possible failed PPS module, there is a possiblility of faulty/premature deployment.
You should be eligible for a no cost rental vehicle though, as I know all Canadian customers are, but stay on your dealer about the PPS module and the seatbelts, specifically the retractor sensor. I hope all of this is helpful and believe me, I wiill continue to hound the GM engineers to fix their stupid, 'waste of time/money' diagnostic methods.

Right now all they are telling me is that there are some electrical issues.

I wonder if the dealership looked at this bulletin. It mentions the connector but it doesn't say the connector is loos it says the terminals in the connector may be loose. If they just looked at the connector and noticed that it's still plugged in, they might not of looked any further.

Same with the replacement of the retractor. If they just replaced it and not looked or repaired the terminals on the mating end of the connector, that might be why your getting the same problems.

Document ID# 1906736
2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: SIR light On/Service Airbag Warning Message With DTC B0081 - keywords B00813A B008139 B008171 harness IPC passenger PIC3799 PIC3799A PPS seat #PIC3799D - (02/16/2007)

Models: 2006-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR

2007 Pontiac G5

2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada only)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
A customer might have a SIR light on with any of the following codes set in the SDM.

DTC B0081 3A: Passenger Presence System Incorrect Component Installed

DTC B0081 39: Passenger Presence System Internal Electronic Failure

DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received

With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023

Note: You will only find this 023 DTC by going through the (PPS) menu

Recommendation/Instructions:
There are two things to check before getting too far into diagnostics.

Check for a loose terminals at the connector for the "Seat Belt Tension Sensor" this sensor (built into the retractor) has a pigtail on it about 1 foot from the retractor. This connector is located under the right rear sill plate on the 4-door sedan, and rearward under the sill plate on a 2 door coupe.
Check for a pinched/cut wiring harness under the passenger side seat assembly. This harness can get caught in the seat track frame/rail assembly.
Note: This pinched harness condition is more prone to occur on vehicles built before 9/22/06

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Had a severed wire under the passenger seat that caused the service airbag light

I have an '06 Cobalt LT coupe, and found that the service airbag light was caused by a severed wire under the passenger seat. It must have got severed from the passenger seat slide rail.

I've attached 2 pics to show what it looked like. The pics were taken as a view from the front of the passenger car seat.
