Exclamation Service Airbag Soon

was driving the other day and I normally don't have passengers in my vehicle; however I had a few in the car and next time I got it, My dashboard says "Service Airbag soon" and my passenger side airbag is off even when I have someone with me. Getting it looked at ASAP and should be covered under warranty. Anybody else get this issue?

Bulletin No.: 09-09-40-003A

Date: July 26, 2010

Subject: SIR/Airbag Light Illuminated, DTC B0081 and Passenger Presence System (PPS) Code 23 Stored (Replace Passenger Seat Belt Retractor and Re-Route Wire Harness)

Models:
2006-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe
2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe
2006 Pontiac Pursuit Coupe (Canada Only)
2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Coupe Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to update the model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 09-09-40-003 (Section 09 - Restraints).
Condition

Some customers may comment that the SIR light is illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find the following SDM code stored:

DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023

Cause

The wire on the Belt Tension Sensor (BTS), that is part of the retractor assembly, may become open or acquire a ground near the sensor. If the BTS is rotated toward the rear of the vehicle, added stress is applied to the wire bundle that may cause an open or a ground path. The two photos below illustrate the possible effects on the wiring. Each photo indicates the area to investigate at the arrow labeled (1).

somone or somthing pulled on the sensor wires, unless ur under warranty, its expensive.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
A customer might have a SIR light on with any of the following codes set in the SDM.

DTC B0081 3A: Passenger Presence System Incorrect Component Installed

DTC B0081 39: Passenger Presence System Internal Electronic Failure

DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received

With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023

Note: You will only find this 023 DTC by going through the (PPS) menu

Recommendation/Instructions:
There are two things to check before getting too far into diagnostics.

Check for a loose terminals at the connector for the "Seat Belt Tension Sensor" this sensor (built into the retractor) has a pigtail on it about 1 foot from the retractor. This connector is located under the right rear sill plate on the 4-door sedan, and rearward under the sill plate on a 2 door coupe.

Check for a pinched/cut wiring harness under the passenger side seat assembly. This harness can get caught in the seat track frame/rail assembly.
Note: This pinched harness condition is more prone to occur on vehicles built before 9/22/06

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

what part of the warrenty would this be covered under? I've been having it for a few thousand miles now and its becoming a pain in the butt. I have around 76,000 miles on an 09 ss. I hope i could get it fixed by them, dont really feel like dishing out a few hundred for something i had no part in.

Mine only comes on when its super cold out (below freezing), and if I turn my car off and back on it usually goes away

This would fall under Bumper to Bumper as the Powertrain Warranty covers components on the engine, transmission, and so on. If you would like for me to look into anything, please don't hesitate to get in touch here on the forum via private message (include the last 8 digits of your VIN).

I just had the airbag light come on while in a parking garage today. It's funny how everything in these cars fail after the warranty is up. I'm at 48k on my 2009 Cobalt SS and my TPMS is acting up, as well as my rear brakes.

It's definitely the Passenger Presence Sensor.... Dealership wanted $750 to fix it...
My suggestion - Go to a junk yard and find a NON-WRECKED Cobalt (LS, LT, SS) and buy the entire passenger seat. You can have the dealership swap the parts for a lot cheaper than the $750 they want for a new one.

That's if your warranty has expired.
